Has anyone heard any news about a new kickstarter or a rulebook revision? I feel as though the designer has announced a few kickstarter dates that have come and gone already.

No idea about any announced dates. The last thing I heard from the designer was that he was play testing the new capital ship decks and the battle cruiser, but that was way back in April. Haven't heard anything since then.

Gunship: First Strike! A hit on Kickstarter and soon available as a PreOrder!

Hi guys!

Thanks for your continued interest in Gunship - things are definitely in the works but I have really been tied up with other stuff. I got laid off back at the end of 2013 and started my own sign/graphics company at the start of last year. Things really took off and I have been swamped for the last couple of years.

Gunship kind of fizzled on us - there is a nice core group of fans but either I failed in my marketing or the Kickstarter board game boom overtook us. Sales slowed way down and Alliance dropped us. Afterburners did not do nearly as well as I thought and that discouraged me quite a bit. I ended up liquidating everything to a big online seller and put things on the back burner.

I think Gunship is a good game and has a decent shot at becoming something. It gets a lot of bad ratings here but every game reviewer I have sent it to has given it good marks. I have revised a few things and the HBC is going to be a great expansion. I just need to make time to finish playtesting it and find the right moment to hit Kickstarter again. Another disappointment like Afterburners will probably kill the franchise so I want to make sure to do things right.

What do you guys think? Is the glut of board game crowdfunding starting to wind down? Is there truly a place for a Gunship Renaissance?

Here are a few pics in case you have missed anything...

I love the game and so has everyone that I have ever shown it to. It looks a little confusing tat first to new players, but it is really easy to pick up and a lot of fun (we've even had some 3v3 games before with multiple carriers per side).

I personally liked afterburners, I designed and ran an online gaming league for a Mechwarrior 4 mod that was very similar years back. I think the problem with it is that it was a very niche market on top of a niche market. This type of game already only appeals to a small percentage of gamers to begin with, and a racing variant of that narrows that field even more unfortunately. It also falls into a problem that any game has in that most expansions will sell less than the original game. Not everyone likes eveyr game they buy, not everyone buys expansions. If done right though, a good expansion can revive interest in a game and boost sales of the original game as well.

I really like the concept of the HBC and I have loved the concept pictures so far. I like the idea of the capital ship combat deck, but I'm still not sold on the way it plays (I posted my thoughts in the thread for that one a while back).

Something that might be worth looking into that shouldn't require too much work and will add nice options for players might be to look into some other player ship designs with different loadouts. The MK II has been a huge hit around here. Things like the Tactical bomber or other specialized ships would be a hit as well I would think. I would love to see a smaller ship maybe with some interesting new weapon options but lacking a torpedo launcher or something for players who are looking to play an escort role to clear fighters and enemy Gunships while their team mates concentrate on taking out the enemy carrier.

I think Co-op and solo play options like the HBC will gain a lot of interest in the game as well. There are a lot of players out there who can't get out to gaming groups or the few of us who are introverts and enjoy playing things by ourselves sometimes. A quick look at the comments in many of the games here on BGG that offer a solo play variant will show you what I mean. I really enjoy co-op type mission/gametypes as well as they are great for teaching games to new players.

I'm definitely up for helping you test anything if you want. Gunship has been one of my favorite games since I picked it up. I would love to help out in keeping it alive and helping to make it better.

I have to echo all the posts on afterburners. I had campaign rules, advanced rules, tactical bomber, and planetary invasion dancing in my eyes. and then afterburners came out. did not care for the theme at all and didn't see any improvement to the base game in the AB box.

HBC looks awesome, but I am a little worried about the price point. I was hoping for some more smaller expansions before something like that. I was really tempted to get the MK2 but it didn't seem different enough to me to go for it. I was waiting on that bomber!

so, kickstarter... there are a lot of space themed games out there right now. they are however normal boxes of game. Maybe GS could stand to be more modular, splitting the difference between a box plus expansions type game and a buy-your-army type game. If that makes sense.

Over all I think the francize has a lot of room to move into some epic areas. And every move takes it further from one aspect of its original greatness; simple quick. sometimes with my Kids we play +0 crew +0 upgrades because we just want fast. So the game still plays both ways for us depending on mood.

Anyway, glad to here the sign business is working out for you! don't give up on the games!

If you want brutally honest feedback about our thoughts about the game, I can't speak for anyone else, but for myself, I was a kickstarter backer, and after playing twice (and it sitting on the shelf for a while) I ended up selling it off.

Some of the reviews here hit on this a bit, but for me the biggest problem is that I just didn't feel like there was any real meaningful choices to make during gameplay. Lots and lots of small actions and different options, but I didn't get an impression that many of those choices actually made that much of a difference.

Combined with gameplay mechanics that just seemed like busywork to us for no reason (fighter, carriers, customizing ships), this sank my drive to play it again, especially since (like a lot of other people I know) there's already plenty of underplayed games waiting for a chance.

I think there's a core idea in Gunship that could be great, but I feel like it needs some serious overhauling/rethinking of some of the mechanics, and lots of playtesting by unbiased/non-invested players.

Just my two cents, hope it's not too harsh or hard to hear.

I picked up the game over the holidays on deep discount and got a few plays in. Then I went looking for the expansions. The afterburners racing game had absolutely no appeal to me. This is a dueling game at heart. Making a racing game out of it was a serious mis-step IMO.

If you want my full and honest opinion read on.
I believe this could have been and should have been the Scify version of Mage Wars Academy if it had been fleshed out a little better. My biggest problems with the game were:
1. very weak components. Every board and card in my box came warped and the cards feel thin and weak. Most kickstarters today are coming with lavish pieces. The components were merely serviceable. Also the idea of slotting cards onto the ship somehow didn't carry over to the weapon pods. They looked awkward just sitting off the gunship board.

2. The predominance of luck. After several games it really feels like most of the game comes down to luck all around. One person may try to strafe a carrier only to get blasted to pieces, while the other player flies through totally unscathed. The first player is going to lose the game from one bad roll. That should have been worked out in playtesting.

For me what this game sorely needed was greater depth. More options for strategic play. It came right up to the line but just didn't make it. I think if all the planned additions had come through maybe it would feel more complete, but hopefully no bloated. Still thanks for making the game. I will continue to enjoy it as it stands.

Pick up a copy of the Aresenal expansion if you can find one. Also the MKII gunships add a little bit of variety. Both used to be available from Cool Stuff Inc last I checked, but it has been a while.

The Arsenal pack adds a lot of new weapon and generator options for customizing your ship and the MKII is a variation on the standard gunships that has two torpedo launchers at the cost on one of your other weapon slots. They have a couple different options as well.
