Posting for a colleague, who apparently played this game mid 40's, any guesses going off of the pieces? Axis & Allies popped in my head, but that is just a guess....

Those would be the bits from Dictator at a guess. Although i could only see blue subs & silver aircraft in the Dictator images

More help on a follow up email.......-->

Our game was played on a board that had two large islands and the rest ocean. It was less sophisticated than A and A...

And strangely, 4 player colors.
Yeah, I don't know about that. Maybe something else from Corey Games?

Although I don't see anything else from them that qualifies. Nor anything from anyone else - there are lots of war-themed games from the 1940s and earlier, but not too many that use metal pieces, and none that I can find that have a board with two islands on it.

Looked like a good guess, but blockade is a no go. The 4 colors is kind of a sticking point there.

OK, but how close is the map? Similar to what your colleague remembers or not? Any tidbit of information would help.

Just got another email, upon further inspection it does seem this is right. Though the 4 different colors is a bit of a mystery.

Thanks for the help all!

It's possible Corey published sets with different colors at different times and some got mixed. Or, since they are fairly generic pieces, the green and bronze ones could have come from another game - as noted the Conflict ships are very similar if not identical.

Another possibility: Tactics. It does have four colors of pieces and has what look like the correct ships and planes. However:

* It doesn't have a board with two islands in the middle.

* It doesn't seem to have subs - the pictures here aren't great but this eBay auction seems to have all the pieces and none are shown.
