I do not have a copy of the 3rd fleet rules (only 2nd Fleet). I am curious, can someone describe the rule for coordinated air strikes?

In a nutshell...

Without the rule, you activate stacks of air units from a single hex.

With the rule, you can fly this stack over another airfield/carrier, add the aircraft there to your original stack and continue to the target. You still cannot exceed four INT, ATK, or BMB units.

For example, your shorter ranged INT aircraft may be deployed at a forward base while your longer ranged BMB aircraft are further back. This rule allows your BMB units to fly to the forward base and pick up an INT escort.

One of the Fleet games actually has a rule like that? Cool.

Why not go one step further (and be congruent with IRL) and allow any planes from any bases to fly separately, in separate hex-paths, and combine at any hex (to include the target hex) to form the strike group and do the attack? (Can still limit stack to four if want to)

I'm not sure what the rational is to restrict such use of airforce in the Fleet series, however the latest OCS ruleset let's you do just that. No need to worry where the airplanes are coming form, as long as they are within range and stacking limit.
