I just received my usual MSN junk mail this morning with this report included.

It makes depressing reading:

http://www.msn.com/en-gb/lifestyle/family/19-of-the-greatest...

Why is boardgames hitting the news depressing ?

Played all but 2 and half of them I'd even play again when asked.

Snakes and ladders and Ludo? Kill me now...

Might as well call coin toss the greatest game.

(the article isn't very surprising, though. I've seen more like it)

Because board games have come a long way since Monopoly and Clue(do) and, for crying out loud, Snakes and Ladders. All this reporter has done is think up 19 games everyone will know and write something about them. This is exceptionally lazy reporting.

And to answer your question, board games hitting the news is depressing when the news article only goes to reinforce the existing stereotypes of what a 'good' board game is.

You found my uncreative, hidden message. I will put something smart here once I had enough coffee. There is never enough coffee...

This seems to be an Advertorial since all games are either published by Hasbro or ancient classics...

Go - rated 7.70
Chess - rated 7.09
Carrom - rated 7.04
Backgammon - rated 6.51
Scrabble - rated 6.35
Labyrinth - rated 6.34
Stratego - rated 6.20
Scattergories - rated 6.12

Given the BGG scale of 6 (ok) - 7 (good) - 8 (very good) - I'm not seeing what you're so depressed about - did you really expect an in-depth review of the new Through the Ages ?

The way I see it, people not familiar with boardgames got a nice list of games that are worth discovering

We all acknowledge that BGG rating isn't anything definite, set in stone or even a good frame of reference for folk outside of the hobby, however I'd say that anything rated below 7 doesn't belong on a 'greatest' list. (Unless you were writing the article as a through-the-ages look at gaming)

That's what makes it a bad article, there are simply better board games out there (and, in some cases on the list, hundreds of better games :-))

The article itself is fine, it just has a slightly tenuous title.

What I expected was a well considered article about great games which might be informative to the reader. This was far from a nice list of games that are worth discovering, this is just a catalogue of the market leaders.

By the definition you gave the writer included all of three games which could come under the heading 'good', the other 16 didn't even manage that. And these are supposed to be the greatest.

Anyway, the description of Chess barely made any sense

From MSN? Why? What authority/credentials do they have?

It's a fluff piece. Just hit delete and move on.

Hyperbole like "worst x ever" obviously isn't.

You're quite right. I hate terms like best/worst ever, mostly because we haven't had all of time yet, plus of course best/worst are very subjective terms.

Please consider the subject title to be: I don't think this boardgame article is very good.

Not very punchy, but at least I spelled boardgame correctly.

Hey, I like the title - it's a subtle jab at the "greatest ever" hyperbole of the quoted article.

Or maybe not...
