Ah yes, two among many off the top of my head were Desert War and A Soldier Reports which I got autographed by General Westoreland.

I completely forgot about the Military Book Club, even though I had to have 30+ books because of them.

I got rid of most of my collection through attrition from moves. They were all hard bound and had some heft. Probably after two moves, I donated most of them.

I used to have quite a few books from that, but I think I have only 2 or 3 left. I did hate the idea of 'we're sending you this book unless you tell us not to'. I had to ship back numerous books because I sent the card in too late, or forgot to send it at all. The books I did keep I devoured immediately.

Very timely!

I just finished reading the 10,000 Day War.... The same copy I got with my membership some 30 years ago. I reckon it took me about 10,000 days to read it.

Loved getting the free books with the sub. Must admit, had to buy more than a few when I didn't return the card on time. Very hard on a poor high school kid....

As I recall it I got flyers all the time from both the Military Book Club and the History Book Club; they may well have been run by the same company as I seem to remember seeing some of the same books on both lists. I think I went with History.

Looks like I still have several: The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire, by Edward N. Luttwak, was one I particularly enjoyed. Another was The Age of Arthur, by John Morris, although I've heard some of the scholarship behind that one questioned. I still have a couple of Michael Grant's books dealing with Ancient Rome from that subscription as well.

I joined the Military Book Club around 1974-75, and I believe I still have all of my books (I just can't let a book go).

I think this was one of my first books,

but being a wargamer this one was of particular interest to me

but the best one I ever ordered was

Despite living in the South all my life, I knew relatively little of the American Civil War. I was rejoining the MBC after being out for awhile, and I decided that I needed to learn a little more about it. I chose this book as one of my three choices when I rejoined, and not only did I like it, it remains one of my favorite books to this day (and led to many more book purchases on the ACW).

(Sorry for making the images so big, but I thought they maybe someone reading might be like myself and be unable to read the small pics).

Yes, great memories indeed. Still have the complete Amber Book series in hardcopy to help me figure out exactly what each German WW2 infantry (or whatever) counter actually consists of in some of the wargames I play:

Full hardcopy Osprey series on Pacific battles such as:

or volumes specifically devoted to battles many have never heard of or have forgotten about such as:

But as far as the checkbook goes, I've merely substituted buying from the book club with GMT Games so from a financial standpoint, no progress made...

I think they are still around, or at least it seems like I still get periodic emails asking me to resubscribe. I was a member of a while in the 90's, and they had changed their model so there was no autoship, which I appreciated.

I remember not remembering to send the card in and running up a huge bill. I got a series of letters threatening to take me "to collections," but at age 12 or 13 I had no idea what that meant.

In a similar 'vein', then does anyone know how many 'volumes' the hard-bound "Vietnam"-series consisted or comprised with? Also, what are their 'titles'? I've gotten 10 from that, and found out upon 5 others that I lack, yet, were this A-L-L or how many additional in order to complete the entire SET?
surprise

I saw a set of these at Half Price books. Do you know what the scholarship is like?
