1975 World Series Replay
Cincinnati Reds vs. Boston Red Sox
Game 3

The Cincinnati Reds finally lived up to their billing as the Big Red Machine as they defeated the Boston Red Sox 7 to 5 in a game 3 hit-and power-fest and it was primarily the heart of the batting order (Rose, Foster and Bench) who carried the load (6 for 13 combined, 2 hits apiece) with no less than a supporting contribution from all star shortstop Dave Concepcion who for himself had a fine 3 hit evening and also scored 2 runs. In all the Reds had 13 hits with an amazing 8 of them going for two-baggers! Through the first 5 innings the Reds had jumped out to a 5 to 2 lead but the determined Red Sox clawed their way back into the game by knotting it up in the top of the seventh with a Cecil Cooper (“Those cries aren’t boos you are hearing, they are Coops!”) two-run-dinger to right field about 12 rows deep into the Cincinnati faithful off a hanging off-speed pitch. The Reds were held scoreless in the 6th and the 7th innings by Roger Moret until HoF Joe Morgan smashed a 2-run-double in the bottom of the 8th off losing pitcher Diego Segui driving in Concepcion and Cesar Geronimo, who had singled in front of Morgan, to seal the fate of the struggling Red Sox. Will McEnaney, who entered the game in the 8th in relief, then ruthlessly drove a dagger deep into the hearts of the Sox loyals by striking out the side in the top of the ninth to finish the Red Sox’s frustrating night and get credit for the win. Other hitting stars for the Red Sox in their losing effort were Fred Lynn, Rick Burleson, Carlton Fisk and Rico Petrocelli who all had 2 hits with Lynn slamming a home run of his own in the first to give the Sox their only lead of the game, 1 to 0, and after that it was mostly catch-up baseball for the Sox who ended up falling short of their goal by 2 runs.
