Here is our experience playing with 2 players and the AI player. We've played it about 4 times now. We enjoy it very much, and prefer it over just 2 players.

1. Use Event cards and AI cards, ignoring the bits on the AI card that replaced Event cards (ie famine and number of starting engineers).

2. Start the AI player 3rd in turn order, but allow it to move up and down the player order, like a normal player based on military.

3. Move the AI player markers on all tracks. Scoring books allows possibility of one player scoring 2 points. The second human player might not score any if he/she falls behind the AI player in books. This motivates the second player not to ignore books if they fall behind. They want to at least beat the AI player to score 1 point, thus reducing the leading player's advantage to 1 point (net).

4. Use 5 columns on the progress board. Roll an eight sided die instead of 6. Rolling 1-5 kills the corresponding row. Rolling 6 equals the result of 5 on the AI card. Rolling 7 equals a result of 6 on the AI card. Rolling 8 is no action. "No action" simulates player actions that do not directly impact other players (like placing a worker on a building).

5. You also want simulate the AI player permanently "passing" in case somebody plays China side B or other possibilities. So, we do it this way: After 3 rounds of actions, the AI player has a 50% chance of passing. Roll 1 die to see if the AI player passes. If not, then roll the die a second time and consult the action result as normal. This allows China 3 possible actions and then 50% chance after that for their special ability (if the other human player does not pass first). Modify this as you feel appropriate.

6. After playing this variant several times, we decided to reduce the maximum number of engineers killed by the AI player to 2. Killing 3 engineers works in solo play, but it is too rough with 2 human players. Similar to using 5 columns instead of 4, we want to keep options open so that AI player has an impact, but does not kill all our options too fast.

Because we play a lot of 2 player games, we found that adding the AI player was very enjoyable and noticed the following benefits (to us).

1. We are not just out thinking each other. We have an unknown player, whose actions who may mix things up.

2. Player order without the AI can potentially determine the fate of the whole game. Often there is one "best choice" and path for buying cards. The second player has a hard time changing their fate. We even tried penalizing the first player 1 resource each round, but it was not enough to offset the advantage of going first.

This is just our experience, but we are enjoying it very much, so I thought I would share.

Just tried this out and it was much more competitive all round in areas sometimes abandoned in two player games.
We did however change the whole progress line wipe out to just taking the cheapest and working up to the three coin ones . Taken from the dice version.
On one occasion a line was cleared three in a row so we took from next line to be consistent.
Also regarding loss of engineers , we just took a random wonder from the progress board and if there were none we moved to a war card.
This made things interesting as it made you wonder if you should trigger a war early at your own military level if there were no wonders up.
