The ballots have now been sent out. 32 former Major League players are eligible for induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York next summer.

Members in good standing within the Base Ball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) and of a certain level of seniority therein are eligible to vote.

To be eligible for the vote, a player must have played a minimum of 10 seasons.

To be voted in, a player must be selected by a minimum of 75% of the BBWAA vote. A player not voted in must obtain a minimum of 5% of the BBWAA vote to continue to be eligible for the following year. Beginning in 2015, a player may be on the ballot a maximum of 10 years (previously, it had been 15 years; 2 players--Alan Trammell and Lee Smith--were grandfathered into the ballot based on eligibility under the old format).

This year, 15 players are eligible for the first time:

Garrett Anderson
Brad Ausmus
Luis Castillo
David Eckstein
Jim Edmonds
Troy Glaus
Ken Griffey, Jr.
Mark Grudzielanek
Mike Hampton
Trevor Hoffman
Jason Kendall
Mike Lowell
Mike Sweeney
Billy Wagner
Randy Winn

Two players are in their final year of eligibility: Trammell and Mark McGwire.

So, in the spirit of Dan Le Batard, let's put it up to a fan vote:

Sorry, but screw Bonds. And probably Clemens, which is really too bad.

I hope McGwire, Bonds and Sosa never make it. They shouldn't be rewarded for careers that were built upon their using steroids.

Agreed completely. Add Clemens to that list, for steroids and being a prick.

Bonds and Clemens had Hall of Fame careers before the juicing - which kind of makes their juicing even worse. For the moment, I'd agree they don't go in (nor do McGwire or Sosa, who I don't think would have been HoF candidates without the juicing).

On a more positive note...

Griffey Jr is a no-brainer, should be first ballot Hall of Fame.

Alan Trammell should have been in the Hall YEARS ago. He (like Dave Concepcion, who has zero chance of making it) suffers in comparison to the post-Ripken generation of more offensive-minded shortstops. Heck, I think Trammell's partner Lou Whitaker should be in too (and I'm not even a Tigers fan).

Others who should be in from the list:

Lee Smith (what, retiring with the major league record for most saves isn't enough?)

Trevor Hoffman (passed Lee Smith's record; if any closers are ever to be in the Hall, shouldn't it include be the ones who are #2 and #3 for career saves?)

Tim Raines

Mike Piazza

Mike Mussina

Gary Sheffield

Based on 14 votes, only Griffey Jr has the 75% required to get in.

Trammell should be in, but I don't think he's going to get the votes.

Probably dumping McGwire and ... reluctantly Edmonds

It would appear some here would never qualify for voting privileges with the BBWAA. It's difficult enough for a player to get voted in without people wasting their ballots by marking down the likes of Mark Grudzielanek or Randy Winn.

Wow.

So many players I haven't heard of.

I did select an informed 10, though.

I did not vote McGuire...I just don't think he is HoF material. Home runs, yeah, but what else.

I also believe Rose should be in, as well.

Baseball is full of themselves with the steroid/enhancement thing.

There are players in the hall who were on amphetamines. Where is the outrage.

If there is an advantage, someone will exploit it. It's sports and it's HUGE money.

Raines and Trammell were the last 2 I trimmed from my list. I wouldn't be upset in the least if either or both of them made it in.

Good ol' greenies. This reminds me that I need to re-read Ball Four at some point.

Honestly, I'm not well enough informed to be sure, but I don't think that there are even 2 names that deserve to be in the HOF from that list.

I only think Ken Griffy, Jr should be in.

There are others I'd vote for, but I couldn't bring myself to cast 10 votes, even knowing that they'd probably never get to 75%.

(I have a soft spot in my heart for Clemens b/c the Bill Simmons, who I like, hates him so much. That has to be worth at least 10% of the ballots.)

One of the biggest crimes has been how badly "The Crime Dog" Fred McGriff has been overlooked. He should be in.

I do like the fan vote here (through 25 votes) where the proper players have less than 5% of the vote and would be dropped from the list going forward.

I think perhaps 15 of those names had careers worthy of being enshrined. For what it's worth, I don't care much about the steroids debate, and would have no trouble voting for Bonds, Clemens, and, to a lesser extent, McGwire.

Hopefully they'll push a few worthy candidates through and clear up some of the logjam.

Amphetamines were used not as a performance-enhancing drug, but rather a "I'm a professional athlete who was out until 5AM banging high-class broads and getting shitfaced out of my mind and now I need to do my job and hit a curveball" drug. It was never about building muscle-mass to fundamentally change your body into a big-headed freak because "chicks dig the longball" it was about basic alertness & focus.

He should not be in, because Fred McGriff was never the BEST 1B in the league. He stuck around forever, amassing the sort of counting stats that old-timers love, but never getting an MVP (nor even close to one) and only an All-Star for a smattering of odd years while bouncing around a handful of teams (also a sign that a player is not Hall-worthy.) Baseball is full of power-hitting 1B, so to get in during the era he played in means you have to go above and beyond. Solid player, Hall-of-Merit player, but not HOF'er.

Come on, people. TIM RAINES. He was a monster! He was an incredible player who absolutely was one of the best lead-off batters of all-time - second to Ricky Henderson. I'm kind of amazed that Trammell has just one fewer vote than Raines so far. Trammell was solid, but never really the among the best at his position for more than a year or so here or there, whereas Raines would get on base and wreak havoc every game.

And only half of us voted for Piazza, the best offensive catcher in baseball history? Yeah, he had a bad arm, but he also called a decent game and blocked the plate fairly well.

Did someone vote for Luis Castillo just for fun?

I'm also inclined to put Fred McGriff in because his career numbers are very good, but I guess it's the Hall of Fame, and it needs to be just the absolute best that get in.

Martinez was an elite hitter, absolutely one of the best in the AL for a long time. Problem is, his mostly-DH role for the last half of his career is going to hurt him every year he's on the ballot.

I'd have a hard time seeing Junior inducted unanimously - when Aaron, Ruth, Mays, Cobb, Walter Johnson, Mathewson, etc. - didn't have that.
