Yes, I know a proper 18XX tile should have a tile number.

Unfortunately, the last I looked the con hotel only had three portals, so we can't even teach the newbies layering. :-(

Layering is one of the very very basic strategy tools of Ingress.

It serves two functions:

(1) You get to make more fields from capturing the same portals, giving you more personal stats and more AP (experience points towards levelling up.)

(2) The area under the field counts multiple time towards your team's control score.

The simplest form of layering:

You make a triangle (field)

Then you connect a 4th portal, outside the field, to the two furthest-away points of the triangle. Now the area inside the original field is part of two fields -- the little one and the big one.

LAST, and it is very important to do this last, connect the new portal to the closest tip of the original field. This makes TWO fields, one on either side of the new link, and not the whole area is covered in 2 layers of your team's color.

Of course, if you have enough keys, you can keep adding layers:

The true power of this is when you and your teammates are working together to make a huge field that covers a whole city or region. If you find a set of portals close together in a relatively straight line, you may find that when you clear the blockers for one link, all the other links are clear also, so you can throw many layers without doing much extra work.

The airport has some.

I love Airportgress.

I killed 5 hours in SLC airport one time just doing missions and fielding.

As long as you picked green, then you're ok.

Just to make it clear: I tipped you for having had the forethought to submit portals at the con hotel, not for being a smurf. :-)

For those wondering what we are talking about, one of the achievements ("badges") in Ingress is for the number of consecutive days on which one has tapped ("hacked") at least one portal. If there were no portals at the con hotel, some of us addicts would be reduced to going back to the airport to find a portal so we didn't break our streaks. (Me? I'm at 252 days, going back to the day the counter was introduced. Not that I'm a show-off or anything. :-) )

I really need to get back into Ingress now that I've got a phone that doesn't fall over as soon as you start an app. That, and I've never shenaniganed with anyone while playing it, I've always been solo (though with Disneyland in my back yard that's not so much of a hardship), so it'd be cool to do whatever team stuff one can do.

Any portals over near Hard 8 or the Grapevine restaurants?

It was very hard for me to advance in the game before I learned to use the map to look for areas with weak portals I could add resonators to!

See, I'm useful already!

This has already been answered below but yes there is.

I saved the Hard 8 portal key as a souvenir. I do that with a lot of places I travel to.
