Five d6's
Sixty d2's
That's 150 dice faces, and not a single pip among them

I guess it'll have to be "first player is whoever grabs the dice quickest"...

...unless there are any interesting/silly suggestions to "randomly determine a player to become first player" using just the game contents?

Re-invented dice surely need a suitably re-invented "highest roll goes first".

Maybe a 2-4 player mini-game involving the new-fangled cardboard dice, playable during setup, while decks are being shuffled etc. Dexterity game?

Or failing anything more interesting, most 'plains' rolled on the terrain dice, I guess.

On a slightly more serious note, is there much of a first player advantage? My guess is possibly, but negligible.

First player advantage in Runebound? I doubt it. I think there's an ample amount of randomness to take care of that.

Choose X number of runes (tokens) to cast, and the most initiative sides goes first?

Since (presumably, I haven't played yet) each character starts with different runes you could use the common monster tokens for that...

The RRG suggests rolling the terrain dice and counting wilds.

Ha! Good point. Haven't read the rules beyond a quick flick yet, but the "choose first player" thing naturally led me to wonder if they'd introduced anything like reduced actions for first player. I guess they also get first chance to reveal & get slaughtered by something they aren't equipped for, and which other players can swoop in on later - so these things even out in the end, as you suggest

I have just noticed now that the Rules Reference goes with a predictably boring suggestion for choosing first player: "most wild rolled on terrain dice". Although I preferred my suggestion of plains, since they have half-faces too, reducing chance of ties.

That at least sorts out "who's round is it next?"
I assume the devs included a secret option for "never pick me" devil

Other ideas using the components:

1: flip N lore/companion tokens count white sides.
2: race from one end of the board to the other using the terrain dice.
3: flip N skill cards count successes
4: flip N skill cards count trophy orbs.

BTW, with newbies you might want to do 2 above just to teach them how to correctly move using the dice.

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

Already loads of good ideas from what started as a frivolous, time-killing thread. Thanks!

That is actually a really great idea when introducing new players. Easily done during setup. Doesn't take any extra time. And you can demo less obvious rules at the same time, eg. rivers/roads

Sounds like a winner, at least for a first game anyway.
Thanks
