This past summer I did a lot of my vintage/retro board game purchasing from garage or yard sales. At one house I spent around $10 on some really cool games. One of which was a 1974 Milton Bradley game called Cross Up. What set this apart from the games that I was looking at was that the cover of the box has Lucille Ball on it playing the game. Plus I found a bonus that the owners had kept inside, a sealed 1960's decal of Lucy under the insert.
I would put Cross Up in the puzzle game category. Cross Up is a competitive crossword building game for two to four players, ages 9 to adult. Time varies on who & how many people are playing.
Setup is fairly simple. The game comes with 108 letter cards, the amount of each letter varies. Shuffle the cards together & deal them into six piles of eighteen cards face down. These six face down piles are put into the plastic card holder that will be placed onto the center of the table in reach of each player. Each player will then receive a tablet with a players sheet that has a twenty-five space grid on it.
The top card of each stack is revealed showing a letter. Players then go around calling the letter on a card & removing it from the holder. Each player then writes that picked letter onto the grid on their player sheet. Players do this until twenty-five letters have been written onto their grid.
Players write the letters into the various spaces trying to complete words in future turns. Because once all twenty-five letters have been written in then each player will start the scoring round. Each player will then circle the words that they formed on their grids.
This is a fun family game that will never be the same each time it is played. Cross Up is a word puzzle game that will keep your spelling & memorization skills sharp. A great learning game for kids.
The only complaint I have with the game, which seems to be everyone complaint, is that you can only score one word per line either horizontal or vertical. So it really limits you to what you can spell as the game will only let you score three to five letter words.
If you find it then I recommend picking it up & adding it to your collection if you like puzzle games or retro games. Lucy loved this game & I believe you will too & game on!
