On page 16 of the playbook, the West is showing as having no trade route from the Suez / Middle East / India areas due to having to trace a land trade route from Malta through to Paris and then a second (illegitimate) sea route across the English Channel to London.

Could the West not simply extend the sea segment of the trade route from Malta along the French North African coast to Gibraltar (coastal spaces being able to form part of sea and land trade routes if I read the rules correctly, coastal spaces being land spaces adjacent to either seas or oceans) and then on to London?

A Sea Segment terminates upon entering a non-Straits Coastal area.
The same principle as for Sea Movement applies.

Agreed, this is not made clear in the rules but the Playbook does illustrate its application correctly.
