Hey all,

Me and my gf are looking for a complex 2-player game (can be more but it needs to work well with 2). We don't mind a long time for a set-up and play but it has to be competitive. We are looking at Twilight Struggle but before we decide to go in, I was wondering if the Community here has some other suggestions?

Thanks in advance !

There are enough war games around that take 10+ hours to finish. whistle

Perhaps an idea to look at those.

Twilight Struggle is a great choice. Beyond that I would recommend Through the Ages or something like that.

Depends on your definition of "long" and "heavy".

2-players, or very 2-player friendly games:
- Twilight Struggle
- Labyrinth: war on terror
- Claustrophobia
- Space Empire 4X
- At the Gates of Loyang
- Mage Wars

You found my uncreative, hidden message. I will put something smart here once I had enough coffee. There is never enough coffee...

War of the Ring is also worth a look, especially if you are into Lord of the Rings.

Hard to beat Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization. You might also consider Roads & Boats or Antiquity by Splotter Spellen. In the not quite as long category (2 hours or so), my wife and I like Fields of Arle by Uwe Rosenberg, another in his farming series. Mage Knight Board Game is also interesting.

OMG, thank you all for the recommendations! I will definitely take a look on all of them - I'm sure that we''ll find something there to suit both of our tastes!

And re wargames - yeah, I was thinking about them, but here is a theme issue - the gf is a declared pacifist and while she doesn't have a problem with an abstracted form of conflict as in 4X games, especially if there are alternatives to it, a game that focuses solely on war might be too much for her.

Anyhow, once more thanks for the suggestions and a great introduction to the BGG community!

In the world of multilayer games being king, there is a reason. Twilight Struggle, specifically a 2 player game, is number 1 here on BGG.

It's that good.

The only game that has a bigger intensity to complexity ratio is Go, which I also recommend, however Go is a different beast altogether. Get TS. You will not regret it. You can play it 100 times and still want to play it again immediately.

Twilight Struggle is a darn good game no doubt.

I disagree with allot of the recommendations of TTA, it really is just who has the best military wins. Not that deep at all.

Splotter has excellent games that scale very well starting at 1+ and going up too 5+ for some games. However, finding them will be much harder and much more expensive.

At the Gates of Loyang, while being very good, is hardly competitive vs the other player. It has very little player interaction.

Mage Knight the Board Game is by far best when played with 2 players. It is deep, excellent hand management with a tun of competition on the board. It however scales very poorly with more as downtime can really suck the life out of it.

Tons of solid suggestions on here, but my go-tos on this are Fields of Arle and Tournay.
