In the years past a wise king ruled all the local lands from the safety of his castle. Though enemy hordes would attempt to ravage the land, his armies were second to none and could drive the monsters back to the dark forests from whence they came, though with many a casualty.

In time, the good king passed away and his eccentric son took the throne. This young man decided it would be better to create a super armory to defend the kingdom instead of calling in armies and loosing the lives of many. Thus the Armory was born.

Now with the Foes on the horizon again, the good king has called the epic Heroes of the Kingdom to defend the realm. Three of them decided to answer his summons.

Robin, Ashphar and Raphael had been travelling through the country, supplementing their income by any means available when word of the amassing armies and the reward of defending the armory reached them.

“Armies? Oh please, nothing crawls in these woods, apart from maybe the occasional goblin.” Robin laughed. “Come on, we should hurry, before someone else takes the offer and the money. That stupid coward wants to empty his treasury? Lets make sure it gets into the right hands!”

Raphael only grunted in agreement while Asphar carefully marked the page in the book he'd been reading and stowed it away. “Can't be worse than the last job. Which was also easy money. Isn't that what you said?” Asphar looked to Robin while scratching a fresh scar across his abdomen. Robin had the good manner to look embarrassed for a second, then shrugged it off.

“Just be more careful next time and keep your distance.” He shouted over his shoulder while already on the way.

After talking to the king and the scouts who had warned of the armies of enemies about to march on the armory, the three took positions on the towers along the way. Robin hiding as usually, the silent Raphael looking forward to the carnage and Asphar idly sitting in the shade and stoically waiting for what's to come.

“Finally! There they are!” Raphaels eager shouts woke Asphar. He stood and looked at those weakling creatures that burst through the bushes. “Looks like Robin was finally right. That isn't even challenging enough to be fun. Poor things.” Ashphar said while drawing his scimitars.

In quick order, Asphar and Robin had dispatched of most of the foes, only one Siege engine was left. The two of them made their way toward the slowly moving vehicle. But Raphael, feeling left out and eager to set something on fire, was already chanting. Before the others could reach the siege engine, he had it disintegrated, destroying it completely.

The other two shrugged and turned back, ready to receive their reward.

The king gave them their reward and warned them, that those were only the scouts apparently, with more enemies on the way. Lots more.

The three looked at each other and shrugged, not terribly impressed with the enemy so far. They took position again at the towers and waited for something to play and have fun with.

Hours later, the three were battered and exhausted, all of them bleeding from many cuts. None of them life threatening but all of them painful, slowing them down. More than once they already had been eager to quit the job and just rush off into the woods, back to safety. But the king was adamant and reminded them of the contract they had signed. Which clearly stated that they were employed till the threat had ended. That the three of them were surrounded by pointy weapons while he explained that to them again, didn't lighten the mood at all.
The only good thing was, that they had managed to convince two others to join them. Elizabeth, a very skilled and talented cleric with a very short temper and brave, noble and rather simple William, who swore he'd give his life defending his friends. “Better you than me, kiddo,” Elizabeth muttered while marching back to the towers.

Tempers were fraying, the last battle had token quite a toll, but thankfully they had managed it without spending any of their resources. They still had some magical items left that could help them out in time of great need.

And when they saw the armies marching towards them, the grim realization began to settle over each and every one of them, that they might actually die. The biggest wave of enemies so far made their way towards them.

And even worse, they could see something else approaching in the distance. So far the lines were holding, the creatures breaking through here and there but with more enemies about to enter the field, imminent death was not a possibility anymore but a certainty.

Too busy and exhausted to warn the others, Asphar just stared as the Goblin Golem, an ever changing conglomeration of dozens of goblins acting as one, appeared in the field. But he didn't need to, the others followed his gaze and groaned in unison.

Now there just weren't enough defenders in the field to fend off all the enemies.
“Time for desperate measures” Robin shouted and invoked a gift from former allies, Midnight and Felicity. A warm, refreshing breeze blew across the field, warming the heroes and for a second, they could hear voices in the breeze. “Greetings, boys!” murmured Midnight and “A gift from us!” That was Felicitys voice. Then the breeze died down, having washed away some of the exhaustion.
Asphar bellowed out a war-cry and cut down four enemies with as many strokes. Robins arrows found their mark again with uncanny accuracy and Raphael instantly disintegrated another siege engine and blasted a goblin into nothingness.
Still, they were hardpressed, the goblin golem quickly teaching Asphar to stay out of reach of them.
Robin looked behind himself where a lone dragon was making its way unopposed towards the gates of the armory. “I was hoping to safe this, damn!” he growled and pulled out a scroll. A disintegration field appeared and the dragon was no more.
Things had started to look good but everyone was wounded. Elizabeth helped quite a lot with her healing aura but blows and arrows came raining down on them quicker than she could heal them.

Asphar, nearly dead, did the last thing he could think of. He called for aid. A gust of wind blew across the field, blinding the heroes for a spell and when they could see clearly again, Ember stood in the way of some of their foes, bow drawn and ready to unleash a volley of deadly arrows on them. In short order, she had dispatched of the rest of the goblins, leaving only the goblin golem itself, without any of his followers. She even had enough time to throw a quick look at Robin. “Getting old?” she teased him but was then too distracted to catch his answer. If there was any at all.

With nearly every enemy defeated, the heroes approached the goblin golem again. Asphar was eager to finish him off and rushed in with blatant disregard for himself. Brave and noble William jumped in front of him and took the arrows aimed at Asphar, which would've been the death of him. Instead it was William, lying there in a puddle of his own blood. Asphar bent down next to William, but it was too late already. He was dead.
Charging in, the heroes made short process with what remained of the goblin golem and finally, the threat to the armory was ended. For now. With everyone alive and well. Well, with one foot soldier down. And covered in bruises, cuts and blood. Too exhausted to even claim their reward, the heroes just slumped down next to the dead goblin golem and waited for the kings man to reach them and clean up the mess.

First time I used a 5x5 map. That thing is really huge. Though I loved the 4 way intersections and the switcher tiles. Very fun. Plus, I won! Not the first time, but the game is really difficult or can be at least. But it was tons of fun!
