A question has come up from a few different people which makes me worry that my card text is not as clear as it could be.

I have these MASTER ALARM cards which require 2 of each type of Engineering to resolve (so 6 total).

I have two ways to say it. Let me know what you think is more clear.

Either of these is better. If we need six things, use six icons.

The first way could be misinterpreted to mean 2 of any of the icons in parenthesis.

The second way could be misinterpreted to mean 2 of the first then one of the others.

I agree with what the others have said. You either need to show all 6 icons or have the x2 beside each icon. I think that would eliminate any confusion.

I'd make the icons smaller and include 2 of each.

I am putting my vote in for having two of each. It's simple and clear to the player.

I read the top card as "two of the things in this set"...

I read the second as "two of the first thing, one of the second thing, one of the third thing."

I would read "X X Y Y Z Z" as exactly that.

I would read "X x2 Y x2 Z x2" as exactly that.

Don't get too cute with your iconography. Keeping it to the simple 1:1 case is the clearest way to indicate what you mean.

Another note:

If these cards are meant to be held in a "hand" of cards, the placement of the iconography is not conducive to 'fanning' that hand out.

Any cards intended to be held in hand should try to move information to the edges in the location that a normal deck of cards tends to have its index (rank/suit).
