In our recent games we made two small changes that didn't increase the length or complexity of the game, but did make it a bit more strategic and made better use of the bluff cards.

1) Bid order.
For the start of the game we randomly chose a player to be 'first' and gave them a token, a wooden coin. This first player had to place a number of bid cards face down in front him as his bid, then the other players in clockwise order did the same. The number of cards played was known and, once made, players were not allowed to raise or change their bids. After every player had made a bid, then they were all revealed and the player with the highest bid got the first token and he would lead the bidding in the next round.

2) Tie breakers.
When two, or more players, had the same bid we use the highest serial numbers on the cards (not the lowest) to break ties. We found this encouraged players to bid with the valuable gold coins as they have the highest serial numbers in the game.

Both of these changes were well recived on our group and you might want to try them in your next game.
