I would like to surprise my husband with a new board or card game for Christmas that can be played with 2 players. (if 2 plus players that is ok too.) We don't have much time for games with little ones so something under 1 hour for sure we would need. He is not into sci fiction, zombies ect. Some of the games that he has enjoyed are:

Sushi Go
Ticket to Ride
Settlers of Catan
Castellan
Fluxx
Takenoko

One of my favourite 2 player games has to be Patchwork. I'm not sure if your husband is particular about theme, but I actually love that the theme is different to most other games. Fantastic game that definitely plays under an hour that anyone with an affinity toward tile laying games or tetris will enjoy.

Other great 2 player games that play in under an hour:
Innovation
Morels
Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small
Le Havre: The Inland Port
Kahuna

My favorite 2-player (only) game is Targi.

If he likes Castellan, he might also enjoy Qin.

Maybe have a look at Archaeology: The Card Game, which is a nice small (can actually fit in a physical stocking ) card game that can play 2-4 players.

If size doesn't matter, Patchworkis a good one

Can't believe that no one has suggested Jaipur yet. Super fast, fun, and easy. It will easily fit into the Christmas stocking.

Also, +1 Targi

and
The Great Heartland Hauling Co.

Are all good, stocking stuffer sized games.

+1 Tides of Time. This would be my first choice. It's the best drafting game for 2 players I've ever played.

+1 Isle of Trains. It's a fun little game for 2 players. It does play to 3 or 4, but I haven't tried it with those player counts.

Hey, That's My Fish! is a great little game that I know for sure plays equally well with 2, 3, or 4 players.

Hive, especially the pocket edition (slightly more portable, but more importantly it comes with the Ladybug and Mosquito expansions). My wife and I have probably played this more than any other game, mostly because we take it nearly everywhere. The tiles are all but indestructible. Our set's had an entire glass of tea spilled on it, something that would have killed any card game, sleeves or no.

+1 Archaeology: The Card Game

1 hour or less, great with 2p, and very good replay value:

Arboretum
Istanbul
Metropolys
Ginkgopolis
Dos Rios - underrated game (and inexpensive on Amazon).

Have fun!

+1s to Patchwork, Agricola ACBAS, Biblios and Jaipur.

One I finally got to play just a few minutes ago for the first time is Oh My Goods! It's a small card game that comes in a small box that'll fit in a stocking.

Others that come to mind are Qwixx, Rolling America or Mr. Jack Pocket.

Have fun!

I'd want more than two people for Fluxx or Sushi Go!.

Haggis, which was designed for 2 or 3 players.
Battle Line is my favorite 2-player card game. Easy to learn, pretty deep strategically without being prone to analysis paralysis and plays in under half an hour.

Patchwork and Jaipur are the best strictly 2 player games I have played. They both last under 30 minutes. Check out the reviews.
