Do the following search:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/usersearch.php3?username=%23

This search returns 41 users that have a number sign (#) as part of their usernames.

ALL of these users have their profiles / stats / collections / XML / everything unavailable to everyone of us. Most of them give you "user not found errors", and some of them take you to other users pages, like Allen Scott (Allen #8): http://www.boardgamegeek.com/user/Allen+%238

And, of course, there might be other special characters that don't work too. So far, I've found these:

Plus sign (+) - 13 users
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/usersearch.php3?username=%2B

Slash (/) - 19 users
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/usersearch.php3?username=%2F

Users with a slash are funny... they take you - well, at least me - to http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/25261, the Tännhauser game entry.

Will there ever be any solution for this? One of my geekbuddies (#nbs#) has been missing in action ever since I can remember, and I'd like to have access to his game ratings and comments.

You can have access to the profiles, but you'll have to change the adresslines. For #nbs# it's:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/profile.php?action=viewprofile&...

Not a great option, but it works.

Is there a message when signing on, that says 'do not use slash/plus/whatever'?

as far as i remember theres not. But it should simply be made that the user can not use these symbols in their name, its not difficult to do.

Nor is it difficult to fix the broken pages with addslashes() or htmlentities() and thus allow people to have "#" in their username.

Many thanks, Bas! That's something, at least!

But I still want to access his data through the XML API so I can import it regularly and add it to our group's statistics.

acctualy the trouble and bug has been discused before, and the trouble is in mod_rewrite. I doubt that those solutions haven't been discussed in one of those (as Aldie did ask for sugestions of fixes for it too)

It's a well documented bug too. Not just this page have troubel with it.

In another thread where I mentioned this, someone told me of that discussion about mod_rewrite. However, searching for it turns up nothing at all.

Those thread's seems to have been removed.

So that would explain that, you just have to trust us how remember them.

Or go fix the Apache Bug. Or something, I don't know.
