Have you ever looked up at the moon and asked yourself: I wonder if it's going towards full (waxing) or towards new (waning)? This has bugged me for years, and I would always needed to check a resource like Moon Calendar (http://www.paulcarlisle.net/old/MoonCalendar.html) to be sure.

Well, I recently read of a nifty memory device that works every time (sorry, Northern Hemisphere only). If you look at the moon when it's partly illuminated, the illuminated side will be on your right or left. Hold up the appropriate hand and "cup" it around that illuminated side. Now take the other hand and hold it straight against the open part of that cup. When you do this, you'll form one of two letters (with a little imagination since I'm using ASCII characters):

cI ---> which looks like the letter "a"

b ---> the letter "b"

If it's the letter "b" the moon is "before" full (waxing); the letter "a" is "after" full (waning).

Credit for this goes to Brenda Currin of North Carolina.

I learned it as "DOC". When the right side is illuminated it looks like a D. Full moon is an O. Left side illuminated is a C. So, waxing is a D and waning is a C.

That's a cool mnemonic. Thanks!
