I am currently playing with the idea of doing a play by forum for Marvel Legendary and spent more time than I want to admit on a solution on how to do so on this site.

I am not great with the formatting of posts but I have most of the details of how it will work ironed out but not sure if there is any interest in doing this on BGG.

Okay. Well I suppose that is enough to get started.

General idea is pretty simple. roll a D-x where x is the number of cards in that deck. The rolled value comes out and placed where it needs to go and the then the cards are re-numbered. This would be a lot of work to forum which is why I developed an excel formula to automatically renumber the list.

Player Decks treated the same way. Cards are added and removed from the their individual lists and then cards are randomly drawn using the same numbering system.

This is a very poor and confusing explanation with out seeing the spreadsheet I have developed, but it is a WIP and most of the components seem to work pretty well but there is still some details to figure out like drawing and discarding

Forgive my ignorance but what does 'play by forum' mean?

It sounds like it would be interesting...

It means we would play a game of Legendary in the forum using just posts.
It hasn't been done here before because of the level of complexity to would take to do it, but I have never been one to shy away from complexity

Check out this Firefly PBF game to show how these types of things work.

Obviously Legendary would be different, but some of the concepts are the same.

I don't know if this would help, but I made myself an excel spreadsheet for playing solo games when I didn't have the cards (eg spread over a few lunch-breaks, or on business trips). I could probably adapt it for more than one player without too much difficulty, and then could post as like a shared document or something?

It works roughly like this:
All the cards in a deck are in a list, and then you have a random number generator cell. You input the cell range for the deck and it picks out a card for you (I can post the file and give a more detailed explanation if people are interested).

Great Minds think alike.

I created a similar excel spreadsheet and pulled all of the text from the Card Reference thread I have saved.

Yes, please share your sheet. might help me solve some of the complexity issues

I created a Card dictionary for each card set in the excel spreadsheet. SWv1 and SWv2 are missing but I have the format I need.

Now I just need to find a way to display the information to the players in a Clean and efficient manner

Not sure if this helps but I've started playing games on my phone just using the notepad app and a random number generator. I use the template below and then fill out the decks as needed to start with. Whenever I need to draw from a deck I use the random number generator to select which cards to take. E.g. To set up the HQ I'll get 5 random numbers between 1 & 42 (if I get any duplicates, I just subtract 1 from the second number so I'd treat two 5s as 4 and 5). Then I just copy/paste/edit however necessary in order to move the cards around. I also keep a link to the complete card text handy in case I can't remember the card text on a given card.

Maybe others who are more familiar with this sort of thing would be able to tell us if something like this could work here?

Main issues I see are:
-it is clunky, slow to use
-we would need a way for multiple people to edit it
-we'd all be able to see what cards were in each other's hands

I just tried looking through the 'roll' help and found it all a bit confusing. Can someone help me out by telling me what I'd type in my post to generate a random number, eg between 1 and 42?

Let's do this!

We will try to moderate the game all by our selves.

Just like we are currently doing here
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1715428/arkham-horror-lcg-p...
with Arkham Horror: The Card Game
We are now currently at 4th scenario.. The game was slow just like a normal PBF games. but it was fun...

So how about we try this NOW?
Any takers?

Let me try the set up now..

We will refer to this list for the cards
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1243890/complete-card-text-...

How about we try this one:
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1743695/all-new-weekly-chal...

Yea I am abit ambitious... but..
We will try if we can have 4 players

=======================================
4 Player set up
Scheme: Capture Baby Hope
Mastermind: Mr. Sinister
Henchmen: Maggia Goons, Sentinels
Villain(s): Wolverine Clones (To create this Villians group use the Wolverine cards from Sentinel Territories, Domain of Apocalypse, X-Men '92, and Wolverinepool from Deadpool Corps), Marauders, Streets of New York,
Heroes: Old Man Logan, Professor X, Wolverine, Wolverine (DC), Apocalyptic Kitty Pryde

8 Random Bysanters
=======================================
Scheme
Capture Baby Hope
Setup: 8 Twists. Put a token on this Scheme to represent the baby, Hope Summers.
Twist: If a Villain has the baby, that Villain escapes. Otherwise, the baby is captured by the closest Villain to the Villain Deck. (If there are no Villains, do nothing.)
Special Rules: The Villain with the baby gets +4 Attack. If you defeat that Villain, rescue the baby to your Victory Pile (until the next Twist). The baby is worth 6 VP at the end of the game. If a Villain escapes with the baby, stack a Twist next to the Mastermind and return the baby to this Scheme card.
Evil Wins: When there are 3 Twists stacked next to the Mastermind.
==================================
Mastermind
Mr. Sinister

Mr. Sinister gets +1 Attack for each Bystander he has.
Always Leads: Marauders

We've got a test run going on another thread just now. Running a 2 player game between me and Theorel. Still working out the kinks, but managing it using a combo of rolls on BGG posts and a GoogleDoc. Towards the end of the thread we've gotten into a pretty good swing of passing turns back and forth. Take a look if you're interested.
