I am looking for some really good two player games. Just from my experience alot of 2 player games are not as fun as having multiple players just because there does not seem to the that general 'random' variable of having more people.

So I am just wondering what are some of your guys favorite 2 player games? Board games/card games, the sky is the limit here.

Twilight Struggle is a must for anyones 2-player collection. Simply one of the best for replay, theme, etc.

Any of the C&C collection: I personally like C&C: Ancients and Battlelore.

A multiplayer games that scale well for my wife and I are (though many of these feel different as multiplayer games, they still offer alot for 2 players):
Caylus
Power Grid
Traders of Genoa (as long as you make sure to use the additional rules for 2player games)
Age of Steam (some maps do better than others with 2 players--check some of the geek lists about AOS expansions for further detail)

In the wonderful game, Bonaparte at Marengo, this is how to get nasty Frenchies out of a village.

Bonaparte at Marengo, an almost-no-luck thinker of a wargame, absolutely rocks.

Blue Moon is a great 2-player card game, and you can buy as many (or as few) expansions as you want to.

Mr. Jack - new favorite of mine
Battle Line - old favorite
Caylus - for a heavier 2-player (2-5 players)
Netrunner - a ccg, but very enjoyable with just a starter set
Jambo - one of my wife's favorite 2-players
Mykerinos - (2-4 players) an area majority that plays very well with only two

My (and my wife, who is the person I play 2p with) favorite games:

Go Duh! Hard to get into for many people, but the most rewarding abstract to me
Samurai Fun 2p that scales well up to 4
San Juan Good card game, plays more like a board game than a card game
Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper Nifty twist to rummy
Through the Desert Another nice 2p that scales, this one up to 5
Ingenious Very light but fun abstract

twilight struggle is great, that is my current favourite 2 player, but can be long especially for new players (it can easily be 2+ hours for new players)

Paths of Glory is excellent, but more complex and again can be even longer.

I like it a lot, my wife was sort of lukewarm on it but was willing to try it again. Then I played it like crazy online, got really good, now I probably won't try it with her, because she much prefers games where we're fairly evenly matched...and I doubt she'll want to play a few hundred hands online to get her lost city skills up. It didn't appear on my list since I only included things we've played a bunch of times and both liked.

I pretty much stopped playing Lost Cities after picking up Battle Line. I find the latter much more fun, and the two play rather similarly.

thank you for linking me to that. lost cities from everything i see appears to be a favorite. never seen battle line before this thread though, so i will have to check it out.

After taking a look around, Battle Line appears to be out of stock in a lot of places.

After having recently made a similar search, I found the following to be informative places to start:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/8691

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/18661
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/17016

In addition, they have pointers within the lists to other useful lists and threads.

I also suggest finding a 2-player game you like (or that is recommended) and checking out the Geeklists that it is on (use the GeekList module on that game's page), which can lead to interesting discoveries.

The best choice possible is Twilight Struggle. If you don't have it, you have to get it. It's an amazing design.
