Okay, as this is an 18XX game, I believe that the answer is pretty straight forward, but I thought I would ask for clarification. The BGG page lists this as a 3-6 player game, but a few online stores have it listed as 2-6 players. Like I said, I don't believe that this game could be played as a 2 player and I generally trust the info posted here on the Geek, though official variants included with games are sometimes not considered official enough to list.
Help me and others who run into this discrepancy.

Thanks,

Good to know.
Now, is there an unofficial 2 player variant, do you or anyone know why they would post it as 2-6? Is it just a mistake?

The unofficial 2-player variant for all 18xx games is pretty obvious: take the starting money, divide by two, go. Some people play you can hold 70% of a company.

That said, I think 1856 might hold up with 7 or 8... maybe.

1856 plays 2 players perfectly well without changing any rules.

Being a huge 18xx fan, I would recommend alternative 2 player 18xx games that have better balance than 1856 are 18FL and 18Scan.
