After a few games have ended too quickly for our taste, we added a house rule we call "cutthroat". The rule is simple: the first to seven or more Pirate Points (we call them "doubloons") in a turn wins... provided they can survive with at least seven until their next turn!

We have found this adds incentive to the player interaction possibilities in the game as people are far more interested in steeling ships and exploiting low crew weaknesses than before. It also seems to add another few rounds to the game as people battle back and forth to the finish.

Hi Scott!
Great to hear you gave the game a little twist! We've experimented with the "cutthroat" rule but we found that with several experienced players it will almost always be impossible to defend all your ships a full round. Sometimes we play with more points (9/10), to win get 7 ships or eliminate all other pirates! I hope this will give you some more options to enjoy the game!
Cheers,

Steven
