Flat Out War is a generic set of skirmish level wargame rules.

The Rules are free to download, and that's a price I've always enjoyed paying.

When you first open the pdf file you might be struck by the simplicity of the graphics and be put off. This is not a full color high production set of rules. DO NOT be put off. The mechanisms are worth the read.

So how does the basic mechanism work? Simply, and sweetly. As I said in my opening, the rules-set is generic, so everything gets classified as either a Trooper or a Vehicle. These two units types behave differn't on the tabletop as you would expect.

Each Unit (Trooper/Vehicle) is allocated a type of Die. For instance your basic Infantry unit would be allocated a D6. A Weak unit would get a D4, and a hugely tough Tank might recieve a D20. The allocated die has an associated movement rate that goes along with it.

The allocated Die is used in combat, roll the die to attack, a score of 4+ is a hit. Therefor a D8 has better odds of gaining a hit. The hit unit is knocked out of the game until it makes a Recovery Roll. The Recovery roll is a roll of the targeted units die, once again 4+ is success, meaning the unit is back in action, a failure means that the unit is removed from play.

To spice things up, there are many attributes that can be granted to units, that effect various things, such as movement rates, attack ranges, survivability and morale. By using these attributes you can replicate many many unit types.

Thats about all for the base rules. Really you should read these rules, because the apparent simplicity is a mask for the real potential.

There are many fan created unofficial expansions, and a few offical expansions. Hare & Tortoise is a favourite, battling your army of Disorganised Hares against the solidly organised Tortoises is a treat. Other expansions include, WWI air craft, Napoleonic, Naval, Paintball, Modern aircraft, Ancients and many more. Its in the flavoursome expansions/implementations that the base rules show thier true brilliance.

Sounds like fun. Unfortunately, the link on the BGG entry doesn't work.

Just stumbled across this. The Oversoul Games website is down. Can anyone post the rules here?
