This is an odd question, but that's what you get for being a bit of a freak who likes languages and writing systems.

What is the script used to write the upper left numerals on the trade cards? Bottom left is Babylonian (although the 8 and 9 are composed and written as 10 - 2 and 10 - 1), upper right is Greek, lower right is y'r standard 1-2-3-4-strike thingie. But the upper left is proving to be quite a tough nut to crack. I thought it was Phoenician, but no---it almost appears to be a mixture of scripts...

Does someone have an idea?

To me it looks pretty well Eastern, maybe an early form of Japanese script?

No, for two reasons: Japanese script is derived from Chinese (and these signs look in nothing like Chinese or even early Chinese); the second reason is that Japan does not feature in this game.

I think I've found the source: it's a form of hieratic script.

Oh, nice there it is, you are right!

Japan may feature in the game if the Civproject keeps going eastward. http://www.civproject.net And they look a little alike, esp. considering the archaic 4: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_numerals Of course if I was inventing a numeral system, this would be the obvious way to do the first numbers.

At any rate, here's a link to hieratic numerals if anyone wants to see them:
