In anticipation of the game's Autumn release, I've started a development history blog, to talk about the game's...well, development history; the process that Sands went through from being a rough, unpolished idea to a finished product. Unsurprisingly, for a game that's been in development for many years, there have been a lot of changes along the way, and I hope it might interesting to see how some of the early phases of the design set the stage for the way the game eventually turned out. If this sounds interesting to you, subscribe to the blog or to this thread; I'll post updates here each time a new post goes up.

List of posts:

December: Intro post: beginning at the end (covers: the submission process)
January (i): Gameplay overview (covers: the core elements of the game)
January (ii): Combat and militarism
February: Peering back into the mists of time (covers: the earliest days of the design)
March: Spielbany, and the rise and fall of achievement tokens (covers: intermediate design phase, combat)
April: Beyond Spielbany, and towards an action system
April: Tyrannical game designer locks gameplay capability, then uses emphasis to unlock it
May: Advances and the emergence of a (branchless) tech tree
June: Events and disasters (are not actually present in the game)
July: Not really a strategy guide
July: The cutting room floor (covers: systems that were left out)
August: Beyond Sands of Time
September: Plugs and promotion

Third post is up -- an impromptu post about the final form of the game's combat system. A later post will talk about some of the other iterations this system went through.
