Hi there! My brother-in-law got Star Realms with the Gambit expansion for Christmas and I was hooked! But since he already has it, I want to get something different, preferably fantasy themed. I already have Friday but suck at it. I want a game like these two, where you build your deck during the game. I am NOT looking for games like Magic: The Gathering or The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game where you build your deck beforehand.

I'm confused. Are you trying to say that Star Realms is cooperative?

Since you liked Star Realms, then check out Cthulhu Realms - similar idea from the same designer with a different theme.

It looks like he's talking about the solo challenges.

Well, there is Mage Knight Board Game, but it might be a weeee bit more than what you are looking for. It's super awesome, though.

The Gambit expansion has a co-op mode.

Mage Knight is of course on my Wishlist, but I am looking for games that size or smaller too (like Star Realms).

There aren't many co-op deckbuilders, and they all have much bigger footprints than Star Realms, and all (that I know of) include more than just cards.

Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game is the best co-op deck builder.

I actually like Legendary Encounters: A Predator Deck Building Game just a bit better (though, only barely, and Alien fit thematically better in its context than Predator).

However, my favorite Deck Builder these days is Rune Age, with the mandatory Rune Age: Oath and Anvil expansion. There is competitive, but the co-op are really fun as well (if not a bit brutal in a really fun kind of way).

Helionox: The Last Sunset is a deck builder. It has versus, solo, and cooperative modes. It's also space-ish themed though.

You could also potentially use the co-op rules from Star Realms: Gambit Set with Cthulhu Realms by translating it over to the set types and such in Cthulhu Realms.

Not a deckbuilder (and a game that he specifically mentioned in his original post as NOT what he is looking for).

So, you are recommending Friday as another solo to get if he already has Friday? Confused, once again.

However, I agree with you on the two co-ops, but I like Marvel better than Encounters, since we don't really bother with the "competitive" part of "competitive co-op" in that case.

Flip City Not solo, nor is it co-op, but it fits the bill for your desire to "build your deck during the game"

Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game +1
Rune Age +1

Also, I recently picked up and had a chance to play The Big Book of Madness and everyone who played it thought it was quite fun! The theme and art is pretty neat too.

For the purposes of this discussion, the OP is referring to a specific definition of the word. Yes, you build a deck before playing LOTR LCG, but it's not a "deckbuilding game".

Did the expansion somehow make this a playable game?

First game that I literally had to give away to get rid of it. Horrible game. Probably the only deckbuilder I've played worse than it is Miskatonic School for Girls (and maybe 3012).

Pretty sure he meant this:

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Deck-Building Game
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Deck-Building Game
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Deck-Building Game

Although not really co-op.

And now you missed something. I was talking about the line that I specifically quoted (that he quoted). That line of text is nowhere to be found in the thread, and the only post by the quoted user has not been edited:

Pretty sure he didn't mean those, since he named a specific game (that is indeed a co-op), and then apparently deleted his post where he tried to defend his position.

He took issue with your pointing out that the OP mentioned LoTR LCG as something he was not interested in, and gave reasons why he felt it was a good recommendation.

He has a new user badge, so I wanted to steer him toward the Glossary.
