I'm watching Now You See Me (not the first time), and this movie is basically perfect for me. I love Magic, and I'm a huge fan of heist movies, and this mixes the best of both!

What's the perfect movie for you?

The Godfather - gangsters, Sicily, New York, great cast, great dialogue, and one of the few movies that is better than the book it was based on.

I love the religious lore, the story, and the heaven/hell/reality layers. Great performances by Keanu, Rachel, Shia, Tilda and Peter.

A movie that lies on the intersection of compelling story, proportional character development, engaging soundtrack and soundtrack choreography, clean cinematography, competent acting and minimal "downtime".

There are a scant few movies that I believe meet this confluence.
Among those are Back to the Future and Fifth Element.

I would like to include fantastic movies like the Matrix, Amadeus, Alien, Gladiator and Glory, but they all fail at least one metric of the perfection web.

Usually it is failure to give characters proportional story development, and sometimes it is discordant choreography to the underlying soundtrack. Gladiator, for instance could be shortened by 30 minutes to make it perfection.

Oh man do I have a good story about that one. It involves the movie, taco bell, a cute lady, and holding my cheeks closed tight for the whole duration + the 20 mins early that I showed up.

The Princess Bride. Comedy, romance, adventure, insanely quotable. To me it is the perfect movie.

I had seen High Fidelity earlier, but I read the book when I was 36, same as the main character, and that was the first time I was uncomfortable reading a book based on how similar I was to the main character, so it feels like that should get special mention.

Brazil, Blade Runner, The Princess Bride all mentioned already - good.

I'll throw out for consideration Moon, with Sam Rockwell. Since it didn't have any comic book characters in it and it actually provoked thought, it didn't get the notice it deserved.

Hunter x Hunter

But it is an anime tv show. It has a lot of elements in it of the type of shows I would like. Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, Macguyver, Hunger games, Military.

For movies? I'll just go with Love you you. Schmaltzy. Ridiculous. Fun. For a tense one Let the Right One In or maybe Take Shelter. For quiet relaxation Alamar.

The emptiness and melancholy of Let the Right One In and the nicer environments is basically pervasive throughout much of foreign subtitles needed movies. It shows what is missing from our American movies. I like the slower, tenser, more realistic pace and the details in foreign movies.

I actually have a Buckaroo Banzai headband. They were given out at Westercon and a few other sci fi conventions in the 80s to promote the movie.

Came in to post The Princess Bride. I grew up watching it with my mom and brother, I've probably seen close to 100 times. My Mom even got me the recently released Princess Bride'Opoly for Christmas.

Other notables for me:

The Shawshank Redemption
American Psycho
The Matrix
Fight Club

The (original) Star Wars trilogy is a series of 3 perfect-for-me movies that I can watch year after year without ever tiring of them.

If asked to pick a single movie, setting aside that trilogy, then I would have to agree with Matt and Daniel by saying The Princess Bride.

A movie that plays with your mind and has you almost walking out/turning it off and then........it clicks!!
12 Monkeys
The Matrix
Moulin Rouge

Smart comedies:
My Cousin Vinny
Ruthless People
Major Payne (ok, a bit silly, but still good)
Dennis the Menace
The Goonies
Jumanji

Suspense/Mystery/Dramas:

The Others
The Sixth Sense
The Big Sleep
All About Eve
Mildred Pierce
The Postman Always Rings Twice
The Lady Vanishes (just saw this a few months ago on Netflix for the 1st time)
Dial M for Murder
High Noon
12 Angry Men
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Lake House

Can't think of others off the top of my head.

I do enjoy "entertainment" films and grew up watching musicals, epics, 007, etc. Do not watch or enjoy war movies, horror, or gross-out comedies, or disturbing content. I am female and avoid romance films, especially tearjerkers at all costs. Life is hard enough; I don't need to watch something that will make me cry.
