Twilight Struggle has still had an amazing run of almost exactly 5 years at #1. And the gap between it and any other game has been a vast chasm for the last couple of years.

Three months ago I noted for the umpteenth time that it looked to be #1 for the foreseeable future, as there appeared to be no game on the horizon that could challenge its position. But nobody could have foreseen Pandemic Legacy to be such a juggernaut ... or to move so fast.

So now Twilight Struggle will have to be content with being in an indomitable #2 position -- which, of course, is still phenomenally impressive.

Hasn't it been exactly 5 years? 1st Jan 2011 to 31st Dec 2015 is five years to the day.

Indeed, it has. Today would have been the 5 year anniversary.

I guess the competitive game just didn't want it enough.

I like both games. This one though seems to be the start of so many other things.

Last game I played was against a Cold War survivor who had issues with being the "other side".

Take a look to your left, then to your right. Two of you will be dead within the week, thanks to the infection.

Last week, I got Twilight Struggle for Christmas.

Sorry for breaking it, everyone.

That's a pretty good run.

I didn't realize its accession date was so early in December. Or, actually, I thought that it had gotten beaten back down before making it stick on 1 January.

I don't mind that it's not #1 anymore. It might help put an end to the endless stream of fake 1 ratings.

Isn't anyone over 26 or so a cold war survivor?

I think the definition of a cold war is that pretty much everyone survived it (barring death from old age).

It seems to me that Twilight Struggle Legacy would have to go more the Pandemic Legacy route than the Risk Legacy one: i.e., have a planned arc of 15-20 games, with the game evolving over that time. Each game would zoom in on a portion of the Cold War, maybe 2-4 years or so. Roughly the first third of the series is Early War, then Mid, then Late. Of course, that would require a whole lot of new cards to be developed, then parceled out as the game advanced. The ongoing event cards would become stickers, so you could remember game state changes from game to game. Every few years, you'd get an expansion pack to cover the next few years of events. And I think Defcon wins would have to become nearly impossible, although they would be a crossover opportunity: cause nuclear war? Then play Risk (Legacy), on this TS board! More likely, you'd have to replay until you found a way to get past that phase without triggering nuclear war.

Like half the events in Twilight Struggle involve people dying.

Edit: Turns out it's more like a third or a fourth. Still a substantial amount.

Five years is an impressive run. I've never played Pandemic Legacy but TS is an amazing game and will never leave my collection.
