Firstly this is my first proper post so bear with me!
I'd like to share the "fun" game we had between Christmas and New Year which we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and showcased the inevitability of the end of the world in the HP Lovecraft universe!
It was a four player match using the base set and Foresaken Lore, I'd played perhaps ten games, another was on his third, one on his second and the last guy was playing for the first time.
We were playing against Yog-Sothoth and things were going well despite the fact we lost part of the asset deck to the vanishing item rumour, my original character had been unexpectedly devoured whilst trying to obtain eldritch tokens from the special encounter cards and another player went insane (whilst holding a Dark Pact so that was a relief!). We'd solved two of the three mysteries and the gate numbers were under control. Then it happened!
We drew the final mystery card that required solved clues to be placed on the mystery card, with four being the magic number to solve the final mystery. Unfortunately, we were getting low on the Mythos cards so we went all out for the clues. This meant gates were appearing and staying open....
There was a single mythos card left and only one clue on the mystery card. Each character was able to attempt a clue during the encounter phase. Doom was at four and the stars were aligning for an epic finish!
The first player successfully obtained a clue, so did the second player - there were now three clues out of four on the mystery card. The third player failed but the fourth succeeded! Four clues on the mystery card! We'd win the game at the end of the Mythos phase! We'd been playing for about three hours and the joy was palpable!
We drew that final mythos card..... advance the omen track....
Knew we shouldn't have left the gates alone.... it moved to the blue symbol and there were three gates with that symbol....phew, absolute relief! The doom track only decreased by three. We were on one but one was enough.
We then checked the reckoning symbol..... The sense of dread and horror was perfect for Mr Lovecraft as we turned over the Star Spawn of Cthulhu that had recently manifested in Tokyo.... roll 1 die and advance doom by one if you roll a 1 or 2!
We stared at the monster and then at each other and just sat there..... finally my friend sucked it up, grabbed the dice and rolled...... a 1!!! The scream of nooooo was deafening!!!
Yog-Sothoth awoke and the rest was history. So close but so far.
But oh so much fun! We were talking about that roll days afterwards!
So thematic and so typical of the Cthulhu Mythos!
I had to share that end with you.
EPIC story, Dinoman73 !!
Thanks for taking the time and spending the effort to write it up and post it for our enjoyment !

I always experience a sense of dread as the end of the game approaches. Always that feeling that the game will give you a bad encounter or mythos that will kill an investigator or otherwise bring the doom track to zero.
Makes the wins that much sweeter!
Thank you for sharing! It is tough to say which games are the best: the narrow wins or the narrow losses. Sometimes I hunk I like losses more, provided they are epic enough.
