Hello,

I just ordered Pandemic Legacy and I am looking forward to its arrival. I don't have the original game Pandemic. I took a peek at the rulebook online and it recommends playing Pandemic (normal version) a few times to get the hang of the game using the Legacy set. It was a little bit confusing from the Legacy rules.....can I just download the original rules for Pandemic and play the Legacy game using it, omitting components not used? Are there more differences when attempting to play straight out Pandemic with the Legacy set and original rulebook?

The rules for the first month of Pandemic Legacy are pretty much the original rules (with the legacy stuff added on).

So you can play normal Pandemic with the Legacy box. You just ignore the rules that affect future games (scars, panic levels, naming characters, eetc)

To a large extent, the answer is "yes". But there are differences:

Pandemic Legacy gives you the Generalist instead of the Operations Expert in your choice of five characters.

The board's connectivity has changed, but not in ways that affect the rules.

Original Pandemic has five event cards. Pandemic Legacy gives you eight from which you choose five to use.

The game setup procedure is subtly altered. In Pandemic Legacy you get to see the initial infections before choosing your events, then see your initial hands before choosing characters.

If you lose, Pandemic Legacy has rules that are different and more precise concerning exactly how you lose. When each game has lasting consequences, this matters!

Christopher has it right.

Also, ignore the part about putting the reminder token on the Epidemic track (and opening the box if you hit it) in the January setup. Essentially, don't write on anything, put stickers on anything, open the first package, or dive into the Legacy deck, and you're playing your warm-up "non-Legacy" games.

There are minor differences that Clive notes, but they're not important for the warm-up games' purpose, which is to teach you basic Pandemic strategy with regards to prioritizing outbreak management, getting a feel for epidemic pacing, and getting familiar enough with the mechanics of the basic game before layering on the Legacy modifications.

It's worth noting that more recent copies of Pandemic come with 7 characters not just 5 - still no Generalist, but Contingency Planner (as an action, bank a discarded event; when played remove it from the game. Limit one banked event) and Quarantine Specialist (during play, no Outbreaks nor Cube placement in her city nor connected cities) join Operations Expert and the other four roles from Pandemic Legacy.

Very minor spoiler:

During the game, you get some additional characters. Even where they share names with characters from vanilla Pandemic or expansions, their precise abilities may be different to better fit the Legacy game

Don't read this. It's a spoiler!

If you're playing vanilla Pandemic games (whether by the vanilla rules in the Pandemic Legacy rulebook, or by the Pandemic rules), don't touch the Legacy deck. It says you turn over the first card before setting up your first game in January, and when you're playing vanilla you're before January of the season.

The Pandemic Legacy rulebook has a section on p3 marked "If you've never played Pandemic". It explicitly lists all the things in the Legacy box you should leave well alone when playing in vanilla mode.
