It's coming up to the fifth birthday of our games night friends son.

We thought it might be nice to buy him a game he could play with his parents but, not having kids, no idea what might be suitable for a young boy.

Any ideas, or is he still a bit young?

Thanks!

I recommend something from HABA like:
Rhino Hero
Animal Upon Animal
Monza

Or one of the tales and games series from iello like:
Tales & Games: The Three Little Pigs
Tales & Games: The Hare & the Tortoise

But the worst thing I ever done - I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, t-t-then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaa

Robot Turtles

One of the best educational games out there for the computer age...it teaches the fundamentals of coding.

+1 for Haba games!

My 4yo son loves Monza. He doesn't quite have the dexterity he needs for Animal Upon Animal yet, but my daughter loved it when she was around 5 or 6.

One game that has worked well for my five-year-old and us is Flash Point: Fire Rescue. This is a cooperative game, so it lends itself well to the parents helping the kids on any strategic decision-making, and it has both "simple" and "complex" rules, so you can adjust the complexity depending on your group. Plus, it's about fire-fighters! How could that be wrong for a kid?

Yardmaster Express. Ignore the age recommendation. Train theme, very short (for short attention spans), no reading necessary, fun mechanic (drafting), educational (color matching and basic addition/counting). A favorite of my 4 year old and my 6 year old.

My son loved Reiner Knizia's Amazing Flea Circus when he was little. We passed it along to friends who now play it with their littles!

Check out Outfoxed!

I got it for my son who is almost 5. He loves it, can play it well, and is learning from it. Plus it is fun enough that I enjoy playing it as well

+1 Animal Upon Animal

I play with my 4-year-old regularly

For christmas, I got her My First Carcassonne, and that has gone over well, though we've only played it twice.

Also, don't discount games that would make game snobs turn up their noses. I've played a lot of Candy Land, Disney's Frozen, Olaf's in Trouble, Disney Princess Cupcake Game, The Cat in the Hat Memory, etc.

Puzzles are also really fun for kids. Think of a good 45 - 55 piece floor puzzle. (Search "floor puzzle" on Amazon.) My daughter loves this one, and it teaches her the states.

Have you asked your friends if they play any games currently with their kid and how theyve gone over?

As a parent with small kids, I started a geeklist with games I read recommendations about over the past years. It's for young kids (2-6 years old) and is sorted by user suggested age.

I know it may sound mad however I'd recommend Memoir '44 if the parents will play with him.
Remove the command type cards with txt and play parent with child for a few games to teach the unit types.
He should be able to pick it up and with the miniatures his interest will be high.

Both my boys played this from a young age and loved the game!
