I've only seen him in a handful of things but this makes me sad.

You couldn't beat him for some scenery chewing, the Sheriff of Nottingham being his stand out moment.

A real shock - hadn't realised he was that old.

Die Hard and Harry Potter were likely his best known films.

While "Locksley, I'm gonna cut your heart out with a spoon!" is unforgettable, to me, his villainous escapades started here:

By Grabthar's Hammer he was a fun actor to watch.

It's fun, it's healthy, it's good exercise. The kids will just love it. And we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant.

You know, they say there was a man who jumped from the forty-FIFTH floor? But that's another story...

When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

I loved his work in everything he did, but I will always remember him in a little-know gem of a movie, Blow Dry, which also starred Natasha Richardson, Rachel Griffiths, and Bill Nighy. Rickman's body of work will stand for many years.

He'll be missed. A fine actor.

But a giant of British film? He was no Olivier.

Enjoyed him every time I saw him. Sorry to hear this. We seem to be losing more great entertainers/artists recently. But, at my age, I may notice it more.

Whoa, damn.

One my favorite roles that he did was as Ed the Painter in "The January Man", which also starred Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

He also had a hilarious guest appearance on "King of the Hill".

Gonna miss not seeing him in the future.

Time to drag out my Die Hard VHS. It's right next to my David Bowie records.

This has been the worst year for celebrity deaths already! Two artists I deeply respected, gone before their time. Rickman and Bowie. soblue

Actually, he is pretty big. He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and has significant stage cred both in London and New York. Yeah, I think the 'giant' moniker applies.

Edit: Even The Guardian declares him a 'giant!'

I don't want happiness by halves, nor is half of sorrow what I want. Yet there's a pillow I would share, where gently pressed against a cheek like a helpless star, a falling star, a ring glimmers on the finger of a hand.
