The rules say:

Why "must" they? Wouldn't the game work fine if the boards were oriented so both Norths pointed the same direction?

You would look at the islands and stuff upside down, but if you use a different orientation it's not a game breaker of course... As long as you don't get confused about your compass points, and "North" as "Up" comes natural to most people.

Essentially, we wanted to emphasize that, to avoid mistakes, the boards must be oriented in the same way considering how the players look at them, and that was the easiest way to get the concept through..!
