Why is Texas holdem the most popular format of pome? Because anyone can win (in the short term).

That is what im looking for in a board game. I need help finding a new game. Group of guys who stopped playing mtg and are looking for a cheaper game night. I've picked up lords of waterdeep (lowd) (and expansion), seasons and smallworld.

The issue is we've played about 30 games of lowd and 1 of the guys can win.

What are some worker placement games (I'm open to non worker placement suggestions) that have enough luck for everyone to win but enough strategy to allow someone with the best plan to win more?

We are competitive so no coop games...

What about Dominion. Lots of Card drafting. It plays quickly once you know what you are doing

I would branch out to not some much luck games but less strategy games.

Programmed movement - colt express, roborally
bluffing - coup, sheriff of nottingham
push your luck - zombie dice, can't stop
deck building - dominion, star realms
negociation - cosmic encounters, bohnanza

Not everyone is good at everything and everyone is good at something. I consistently win strategy games in my group, and while I do favor that in my collection it's not all I have. I'm last place in nearly every game of colt express I play. Having a good memory, poker face or charisma can win you games that strategy alone will not. Pick something you are good at and try it.

For the record, I view texas holdem as a high skill poker game and 5 card draw in the anyone can win lot.

Have you thought about something more cooperative, like

Dead of Winter

Fury of Dracula

Cosmic Encounter. A game full of chaos. The journey definitely matters, but do not worry much about winning.

From the eighties, but still out in current reprints today for some reason.

Most worker placement games are rather low on luck.

Kingsburg has a good amount of luck, but is still strategic.
Roll for the Galaxy has plenty randomness with dice rolling and tile drawing.
Epic Card Game for something more in the direction of M:tG.

Hmm. Luck-based worker placement that strategy can help...Alien Frontiers?

Other games that fall more to luck based that are popular, particularly in the beer & pretzels gaming vein:

King of Tokyo
Can't Stop
Talisman (Revised 4th Edition)
Galaxy Trucker
RoboRally

Some other gateway type games with some luck:

Catan
Ticket to Ride
Dominion
Ra
