I have 2 decks of standard cards and looking for suggestions of 2p games
We liked the following because of multiple mechanics and interaction

Rummikub - interaction and increasing playspace
German Whist - card drafting followed by trick taking
Triumvirate - trick taking and hidden bidding
Bridgette - complexity

Games that are playable but a bit too simple
Cribbage
Gin Rummy
Haggis, I liked it but mom wasn't impressed

I'm assuming you want games that can be played with playing cards?

Indian Chief 2-8 players with 2 decks of cards (only one deck needed for 2-3 players).

You've already discounted two of my top suggestions (Cribbage & Haggis). I'm surprised that you think Cribbage simpler than German Whist, thought I think Cribbage does seem simpler (strategy wise) than it is initially. If you've not played it much then looking up some strategies on line might change your opinion of the game (it did for me).

I think Gin is more complex than it appears too, but I suspect my memory isn't good enough to be good at it (I've never played).

Also have a look at this geeklist (though some games require a 5 suited deck):

Oh well. The explanation can seem a bit difficult (it's a bit easier if people know Yahtzee so are familiar with the "pick a category to score each round that you haven't already used" thing.

I've tried several of the games on this page (Dracula, Cross Purposes) and found them enjoyable. Lots of his games have interesting twists on old ideas.

Assuming you are focussed on standard cards, Cribbage is my favorite. You don't need the board; pencil and paper are sufficient.

This person designed 10 games to play with a deck of cards based on larger board games like Ticket to Ride and Hey That's My Fish. You can find some great stuff here: So here's ten games I made.
