A nice writeup on the board game cafe scene in Toronto in a major American newspaper, no less. These cafes are really catching on. I was glad to read about how Snakes & Lattes was founded. Thanks for sharing.

Ottawa had three but now it only has two. Lame! The bubble in Toronto will eventually pop and a lot of those places will go out of business when the college kids move on to something new.

Happy as I am to have them, it boggles my mind that this city can (or thinks it can) support so many of these board game cafés. Are other cities evolving board game cafés on every corner, too, or is it just a Toronto Ontario thing?

When Waterdown gets one, then the bubble is about to burst. 'sides, I'm OK with our hobby growing like that. Maybe easier to get a game going!

I love the concept of boardgame cafes so I try to spread the word and promote them as much as I can. It may be a "bubble" with the number popping up, but it's great to see the hobby getting exposure to a wider audience as this hobby deserves more participation and recognition.

Well...Toronto is the centre of the country...and possibly the universe...

Edit: Well I learned something today - always wondered why people used the term Chutes and Ladders for what is, of course, Snakes and Ladders - didn't realize it is a Canadian game.

There's at least two in Metro Vancouver but nowhere near the explosion described in Toronto. Could be coming though. Word travels and if there's a market people will find it. Here's hoping!

Hm, okay. I think of Stormcrow as more of a general geek pub that happens to have some games, rather than a boardgame cafe. Still, one and a half is more than most places.

And 2 years ago it had none, and had lost bayshore by then . As much as I'd like to see these stick around, I agree most of them are fueled by the college fad.

I have never gone to one in Toronto, and really heading they are usually full does not entice me, for the same reason I don't go to bars. Friends end up in the Kitchener one(s) a lot, given that play is precisely a college town and nothing else they are likely in the same boat as Hamilton for longevity.

What do I do instead? Blind purchase games I research and then math trade if they don't work out. The odd time it flops, no big deal.

Not to mention a thriving high-tech industry (didn't Google just announce a major expansion ?) and there does seem to be a reasonable overlap with tech and gaming.
