Passive-aggressive commentary about the member himself rather than the value of the topic is a much reviled tactic dating back to the earliest days of Usenet. Usually it signifies that the attacker is devoid of interesting thoughts himself and thus chooses to attack others in the hopes of getting much desired validation and attention.
