I love playing with other people but all to often I find myself with a hankering to play games with no one to play with.

I would love to hear what games you would recommend that satisfy the following criteria:

a) Are a good solitaire game
b) Have a high level of re-playability
c) Can accommodate more players if available
d) Would rather avoid cooperative games

I already have (or have played) the following:

* Agricola - Really like with multi-player but don't really enjoy solo.
* Race for the Galaxy (with Gathering Storm) - This works really well.
* Five Tribes - Again, I think this works well.
* Tiny Epic Galaxies - Good, but too easy.
* Ghost Stories - Not what I'm looking for.
* Pandemic - I don't like it.

I give myself very good advice, But I very seldom follow it. That explains the trouble that I'm always in.

Imperial Settlers is one of my favorites to solo. I'm always surprised that the (very large, random) common deck doesn't ruin my enjoyment. highly repayable even if you only prefer one civ.

Orléans with its Invasion expansion is excellent, though note that the solo rules and materials are in Invasion (the base game doesn't have a solo mode) which isn't out in the US yet.

If you've got friends who don't shy away from some complexity and/or length:

Labyrinth: The War on Terror, 2001 – ?
Cuba Libre
Andean Abyss

All have robust solo bots but are very compelling multiplayer experiences. A step up in complexity from some of the things on your list, but I bet you could handle it -- and in my opinion, solo gaming gets a lot more interesting once you open the Pandora's Box of wargames....

Edit: These are very bad choices if you want games that finish in an hour or less.

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. Quite a variety of games suggested.

I didn't say this to start with but, as a busy family man, time is usually of the essence and so tend to prefer games that will play in no more than an hour or so.

Conquest of Planet Earth: The Space Alien Game is one I'm very much considering for myself. I believe it has four modes of play including solitaire. Maybe it's one for you to consider as well.

Viticulture Essential Edition easily fits 3 of your 4 criteria: great solo option, plays up to 6 players, and is not coop.

I think it has plenty of replayability because of very large number of possible combinations between the grape cards, the wine order cards, and the visitor cards, as well as the structures you can build.

Have you played Infection: Humanity's Last Gasp? I'm loving it.

On the other end of the spectrum, I'm itching to get another solo play of Bios: Megafauna on the table soon!

I've recently focused on only buying games of the exact type

Lewis & Clark is number 1. It's fantastic. One of my top favorite games now (with key flower being my favorite)

Between Two Cities is a very close second. So simple but addictive and elegant.

Nations:the dice game is also great.
I second Imperial Settlers for sure.
Harbour is decent too.

All of these are simple setup and take less than an hour. Cheers!

So yes, I am aware of the high praise that 'Mage Knight' gets for it's solo play so I am kind of interested but deterred by the anticipated length of play (and presumably set up).

Of the games suggested here, 'Imperial Settlers, 'Nations: The Dice Game', 'Glass Road', 'Lewis and Clark' and 'Viticulture' all sound interesting even for their multi-player credentials.

'Space Hulk: Death Angel' also looks interesting as, although it is a co-op, it is supposed to best played solo.

Some of the other suggestions just don't appeal to me personally because of their theme but there are a few new to me that I need to investigate.
