I dunno...
It's a beautiful game, but the dice mechanic is just cumbersome, and feels like a lot of extra steps for little payoff. For me, Magic: The Gathering still gives me twice the fun in half the time. But this is a Plaid Hat game, so you know it has a built-in audience of folks predisposed to loving it. It just didn't really stand out as a "must-have" for me.

I love the dice mechanic. It takes one of the things that I can't stand about Magic (and similar games) -- that your number of available resources depends on the luck of the draw -- and throws it out the window. In Ashes, you have a total of 10 resources every single turn, and the amount of each resource type is static throughout the game. If you think of them as cubes instead of dice, this resource system makes complete sense. The designer then added a level of variability by making them dice, so that some resources are "stronger" than others, according to what you rolled. However, you can always mitigate that luck when you need to, through the Meditate action.

Ashes is very underrated. It's a great game, and my new favorite in the genre of 2-player card battles.

Amazing price.

My opinion on the game: If you want to combine dice and dueling card battles, go with Heroes. It's much more unique and it's a better game.

Unless I'm missing something, you still need to roll those dice at the beginning of the round so the exact resources you get isn't static. I personally like the dice system. Add in a 30 card deck size and the first 5 aspect, and it was one of the best new to me from last year.

FYI, Cardhaus had this for $29.99 during Black Friday.

Like I said, think of them as simple cubes first, then it makes sense. If you're playing the pre-built Aradel deck, you have 5 Natural cubes and 5 Illusion cubes on every single turn. This never changes. The variability comes from the fact that you have to roll them, and so they could end up on one of 3 possible levels of strength... but it's still 5 Natural cubes and 5 Illusion cubes. If you don't get the power die faces that you need, you can use Meditate or certain card abilities to fix them.

Curious, I watched Nick's review of it, and yeah, I'll stick with Ashes.

.. and comparisons to Mage Wars Academy Cards, dice, etc.

I already have and am enjoying Mage Wars Academy, and this does look like a nice deal, but won't they overlap too much and just not get played? hmm.

Yeah, that's my position too. Having another 2p Mage v Mage game is just going to result in both of them seeing less play than just having one.
