The dark night goes pale. Slowly thin streaks of light lift up like hair and splits the insipid sky. A drop of blue slowly bleeds out in the ocean from the center and out.“Moogh” said the male tribe leader. All others around him in the cave opening knew what it meant. Gathering the stingers they made from flint and sticks they set off in the now golden pink but cold morning.

Scuffling through the dense woods and out in the plains they could see their prey towering in the distance under the sun which had now shown its full face. “Ugh Moogh Oog” they exclaimed. A few moments later it was all a vortex of hairs and muscle, blood sprouting,
shouting and stabbing their shafts with flint spearheads into the huge beast. The Mammoth chase had begun - Will they survive the fight and who will be the one that finish off the big beast

Soo my idea is simple - can you take the beast down. There is some discussion weather the Neanderthals in history, drove the Mammoths off cliffs or if they just trapped them agains cliff walls. Should the game have a cliff to push it off?

Poll
Should the game have a cliff to push the Mammoths off or should there just be a cliff you can trap it up against.
Have a cliff edge for pushing it off!
Have a cliff wall that can be used to trap it!

Looks ok without a cliff... no need to make it look like more suffering. PS: I'm a Mammoth lover.

I don't think it matters which end of the cliff is used.

Call me a prude, but the topless cave-woman seems odd and out of place to me.

The game sounds like it could be fun, though.

Re: [WIP] MOOGH - the Mammoth chase, An idea for the 9 card contest
My reasoning for attack against a wall is because if you drove it off a cliff it would leave a terrible splat at the bottom and ruin all the good meat you might destroy from the fall! Plus, now you have to go down and drag all the meat back up to where you were, too much work!

By the way, incredible art work!! Awesome!

Do you want me to place this in the idea phase?

Plus, if you go along with the whole men are hunters and women are gatherers, it doesn't make sense for a cavewomen to be out hunting with men. I'm not being males chauvinist just referencing historical data.

You are prude!

Joking Well a tiny topless cavewoman in a cartoon image hurt no one right? I just felt it would be more true. I imagine that the Neanderthals did not dress very much.. and who knows if the women went hunting? (btw. the guy with the green skirt also show some skin)

..but the main reason for her was actually because it felt wrong in a modern game to have 4 cave MEN. Though I was thinking that the goal of the game could be to win the cave-woman by slaying the Moogh.

I am currently using two cards (one card too many.. but one does not seem big enough) as a board and I think I will have a cliff on one edge players can use when they enclose the prey.

So no flying Mammoths

Re: [WIP] MOOGH - the Mammoth chase, An idea for the 9 card contest
Cheers.

Here is a test sketch of a ability card. Currently the plan is to have some standard actions and a few special actions on cards.. Like holding on to the fur or make a special attack etc.

Since the core main idea was 4 cavemen taking down one Mammoth. It felt like it should be a co-op game where all win or loose. But Would this be fun enough. Somehow I feel it could or should be competitive... But how? My first idea was that it was a battle claiming to be tribe leader, and the one how makes the final blow wins. Do you have an suggestion to make it competitive or do you think co-op is best?

The game will play out on a grid board where players need to keep the Mammoth within range or they loose.

Btw, there is a wonderfully cute book on the subject:

There were also tiny episodes on the tv program "Unser Sandmänchen".

Good times.

I love that book cover! :-D

Game update:

For now I am working with a game goal where the player who make the final blow to the Mammoth wins... It could work.

Also I have 4 cavemen on the board. So the game could be (1)2-4 players.. but I also consider that it is two teams like 2vs2. Then it could be Neanderthals vs the Humans (but they still need/can corporate to get the beast down.)

I wish I could find more picture from the stories... but they are hard to find. Sorry.

I suggest that you keep the Neanderthals as the only choice. Humans would just complicate it all (and cast it too much into the "werewolf game" area.)

You could still make it two tribes (of two) competing to see who kills the mammoth first...

It would be fun to play this game in concert with Mammut, a game where prehistoric hunters divide up the spoils of a mammoth hunt.

This looks great! It would be wonderful to have a variety of ways to trap or otherwise beat the mammoth, both the cliff and wall being included. Why not both yeah? Would also be cool to (wild idea here) have each player draft a one-time-use item or two at the start, like a spear or sling with stones, and give them some clutch plays.

Will definitely be following this. Best of luck, and let me know if you need some gamers to PnP playtest.

Good point - I agree.

I did think about an afterplay fighting for the good parts; intestine, skin, bones etc. if that is what you mean. (I am unsure about the meaning of "in concert"). But I currently think it would be too much. It could be fun if the game started right after the kill..

Great ideas. I like the idea about several traps. Maybe some high noises can make cliff rocks come falling. The problem I feel with the cliff edge is; who did the final blow if Moogh runs of a cliff ? Great idea with tools. Currently I use cards for special abilities that require heavy thinking from the cave heroes. Like for example "climb on"..

I read somewhere it is unsure if they even used long range hunting weapons.. Anyway I thought that it would be awesome they had to go close to the dangerous beast. So currently one special ability / "tool" is throw stone.. which is the only ranged attack.

WARNING

THIS game WILL require heavy thinking and at least 4 brain cells to imagine a dice being a mammoth.
It is currently way to complicated due to the designers attempt of making a really great game out of extremely few pieces.
This game could end up suffering severely from tedious upkeep phases and analysis paralysis.

Continue follow this WIP at your own risk!

Re: [WIP] MOOGH - the Mammoth chase
I am the kind of player that is attracted to situations that lead to analysis paralysis.

It could be interesting if the cavemen are competing for caveman (or perhaps tribal/relationship) glory by trying to out-do each other in acts of daring towards the mammoth. So different things the player can do each can potentially reward or penalize the glory you will gain from this mammoth chase, provided you survive. For example, jumping on its back and spearing it would be more dangerous but yield more tribal glory than winning as a group, so players might choose to steal the thunder at an inopportune time for everyone else. Just some ideas!
