For the 2016 2p PnP Contest

What happened to those old toy cars you used to spend hours fostering your imagination? Are they still in a box somewhere? Maybe your child has them now. Well, time to reacquire them. Time for a war game of miniature proportions!

Fought Wheels: Matchbox Wars is a game of tactical combat with an RPG* element for 2 players (but can be expanded to 4 or 6 if on teams). Each team of three cars is trying to gain the most victory points through a variety of actions. Destroying enemy vehicles, capturing a flags, and successfully completing amazing jump routines are a few ways to gain victory points. Each mission has a victory point chart that is referred to at the end of each round.

The link above is the core ruleset needed to convert your Matchbox Cars into a tactical wargame. However, many other components are needed, and I go into this WIP with the knowledge that owning 6 matchbox vehicles of different colors is not common. But hey, they're cheaper at the store than actual minis for other combat games!

I hope that the BGG community out there has time to read through the rules and offer comments and suggestions. My goal is to make these rules concise, manageable, and user friendly.

Thanks!
MH

Rules are written and formatted to lampoon the style of 1980's miniatures games.
FoughtWheels is a parody of HotWheels (TM emoticon please).

Thanks Misha. For clarification:
1) Plows will work like spikes...+1 to ramming. (I'll update rules.)
2) If you can make a car worth 30 points, I'd be impressed and would love to see the pic of it!

Also, anybody who has further questions about vehicle load outs, you can post them here so others can be part of the discussion. It'd probably work best for you to fill out the VAC and take a pic of it and your matchbox.

Cheers, and thanks for the interest-
MH

Sorry. I had never heard of Outrider until you Kai mentioned this. I did look it up and although it shares some similarities, the mechanics are completely different. I have put extensive hours into Star Fleet Battles and there was a want for a miniatures battle game that uses Matchbox Cars. If anything, this game is more closely associated with SFB (weapon ranges and to hits, SPV is BPV, cooldowns, etc.). Besides that, I assure you that the idea of Matchbox Wars is original

I am confused, and the connotation of spambot is a bit concerning.

Thanks!

er. Wasnt referring to you so not sure why you think I was,

To answer Schattentanz. Bout a year ago someone was going around the various car battler forums and even WIPs advertising Outrider. Sometimes deriding the games they were posting in in the process. It got really old really fast and instilled for me a very defined dislike of Outrider. That they were hitting various games advertising was just like how some forum spambots act.

Road/Kill got a simmilar reaction from me for demeaning players of road battler games that use hotwheels and micromachine cars.

I know Schattentanz wasnt advertising. But it still irks.

And now you know.

Re: [WIP] Matchbox Wars - 1/64 scale car combat - 2016 2p PnP contest
Back on topic.

Had a glance at the rules.

Some thoughts.

Feels a little more convoluted, or at least wordy, to get things done? This is not necessarily a bad thing. Everything is clear and well explained.

Suggestion: Since CP can change due to damage or aces. Perhaps use a 6-sider to track it by placing it in the box with the current CP facing up?

Using the colour of the car as a way of determining its ability is a neet idea. Only other games I've seen do that were VLC and the Fuzzy line of childrens wargames from the 90s. Perhaps the type of car could add another factor to its abilities? Like civilian cars stop better, recreational cars corner better, etc. Or tie the type of car to the possible abilities an Ace can select from?

As for CP, dice tracking is one way to do it. I had thought about using cubes.

The list of vehicle abilities due to the car's appearance is short and open to any suggestions (like the Plow question). I like the idea of recreational cars turning better!

Thanks! Keep ideas coming. I hope people have a chance to play this with their kiddos (or with their kid's cars after they've gone to sleep whistle).

Hey Mike, I noticed that your geeklist entry didn't have the link to the files. It'd be great if you could update that as well so the PnP is accessible.
