We are nearly at the end, with just one more game to play in December. Win or lose, we have had a great time. So much so, that we are contemplating acquiring another copy or two to play with other groups or even with just ourselves. We know that we can keep quiet about any spoiler events should we play with a new group. Since we have experience now, we can even make sure it goes smoothly, with the correct timing of door and box openings and that new rules are played properly.

A little background: We have owned and played Pandemic with Pandemic: On the Brink for several years. Even though we already know that a disease is going to become virulent and that a new mutation is going to pop up, the surprise and game play is not ruined for us. In the same way, knowing about

COdA, the Fade, new characters, upgrades, events, objectives, etc., will not spoil our ability to replay Legacy in the future. Even though we know these events are going to occur, there really isn't much we can do that will affect the outcome of future games. However, there is one big exception:

The Paramilitary Escort character upgrade and its impact on the game after the successful search for the Paranoid Soldier in September. That is the one event that could possibly be impacted by making a different decision months earlier. I'm thinking just keeping my mouth shut will be the best option, especially if I'm playing with a new group. I do know that if no one chooses that upgrade, then it will be a random selection as to which character is chosen to be Sagittarius.

Anyone else have any thoughts on how to best handle this for maximum enjoyability for all players?

Maybe make it random.

Roll a die for each character, if a character has the Paramilitary Upgrade roll 3 dice.

Whoever gets the highest value on an individual die is the chosen one. If the character with the Paramilitary Upgrade is not Sagittarius , you remove/peel the upgrade.

Sagittarius is never random - the question you face with foresight is whether to gain the benefits of picking Sagittarius and accept the consequences, or accept the default Sagittarius (or game the default Sagittarius to avoid a particular outcome - at least one person has mentioned they were tempted to just pause the game there and come back in a week or two in order to change the outcome).

If you're playing with people who don't know about Sagittarius, I'd say keep things as they are and let the trigger or avoid the trap blind. If you're playing a game where everyone knows what's coming, I'd say play as written but, as with your other choices, allow your foreknowledge to shape your decisions. There's enough short-term benefit to Sagittarius that it's a real choice even with the long-term consequences.

Using the upgrade but determining Sagittarius in a different way is somewhat problematic, because of what happens to the upgrade afterward. I suppose you could work around that, though.

I agree with Robert that even if you know what's coming and follow the normal rules, it still likely makes sense to use the upgrade (I did that in a replay). But it does reduce the impact of the event a great deal.

I tried to keep the game challenging by playing with seven epidemics*...but apparently that wasn't enough, because I lost the first half of January, then won the next 12 consecutive games. I think that had more to do with optimizing my upgrades than with knowing about Sagittarius, though.

(*I also started the search target 1 space lower on every search track, so they would go cold only slightly earlier than normal instead of hugely earlier.)
