Axis Turn - February 1942

Weather – Snow

Strategic Warfare Phase. UK Bomber HQ activates. UK 3 step Strategic Bomber flies off to Frankfurt to target the armor factory. UK Bomber heads off to Brussels to target the mining center. UK Fighter Command activates and sends 4 step fighter support to Brussels.

German Air HQ in France activates and sends a 5 step fighter to Brussels. Goering activates and sends a 5 step fighter to Frankfurt.

UK sends 2CS to the West Med Convoy Box. US sends 2CS to the West Med Convoy Box. First naval encounter in the Med in a long time…

Air Combat in Brussels. German fighter gets a hit (UK fighter loss). German AA and UK Bombing is zilch…

Air Combat in Frankfurt. German fighter gets a hit (UK strat bomber step loss). German AA gets a hit (UK strat bomber step loss). UK strat bomber, at 1 step, misses the bombing run. Expensive outing for the UK.

Combat in the West Med Convoy Box. Italian 1CA, 1CA, 2DD vs. UK 2CS, US 2CS. Italian CA hit (US CS step loss). Italian DD hit (UK CS step loss). Subs do nothing. All retreat out of the box except for Italian 1CA. [NOTE: From now on, I am allowing retreating naval vessels from Convoy boxes to participate in either interception of Sea Transport or accompanying Sea Transport. For the former, those retreating vessels make up their own fleet and cannot combine with any other vessels in the Body of Water. The latter are allowed to recombine into other fleets in the Movement Phase and then conduct Sea Transport accompaniment. This is, except for the one modification, the original rules.]

Supply Phase. Italian infantry on Crete is OOS (limit of 3 units).

German infantry west of Tambov are OOS (due to 1 hex supply line limitation).

Production Phase. Germany produces 10 HQ steps, 2 tank steps, 1 tank cadre, 1 bomber step (Red) on Crete, 3 fighter steps, 1 bomber step, 6 infantry steps, 1 fort step, 4 artillery steps. Germany continues the construction of 3 armor factories and 2 air factories.

Germany gives Italy 2 oil and 1YPP. Germany gives Finland 1 oil and 1YPP. Germany saves 11YPP, 4 oil, 3BPP, 3WPP, 1RPP.

Germany AFRIKA depot produces 1 HQ step, 2 artillery steps.

Italy produces 3 HQ steps, 2 OSS steps (1 white), 1 armor step.

Turkey is now Pro-Axis due to the Delta being contested. As a result, Turkish units deploy and Turkey produces 2 infantry steps for units close to the Soviet border.

Strategic Rail Phase. FHQ activates and SRs 4 step infantry from Germany to Gaziantep as a result of German-Turkish diplomacy. The arrival of German forces into Syria from the north is about to commence.

Germany SRs a 4 step infantry from Minsk to east of Smolensk. Germany SRs a 4 step mountain infantry from southern Norway to Narvik via Sweden.

Movement Phase. FHQ put OOS infantry into pseudo-supply and directs it toward the supply lines farther away from Tambov. German forces consolidate to form better defensive lines (if possible). It's been a hard winter...

German mountain infantry in Norway move north to deal with partisans.

Germany's entrance into Syria begins.

[NOTE: I realized that the earlier adventures of the Iraqi cavalry could not have taken place as Iraq was only Axis-Leaning. As a result, I have put the cavalry unit back into Baghdad. As far as the UK naval infantry unit in AFRIKA that got reinforced and then went north to put it into submission, it will stay at 4 steps - and hopefully not find defeat in the Delta.]

FHQ fuels an armor. Mussolini fuels an armor. Movement by Axis forces in AFRIKA to conduct a limited offensive in the swamps east of Alexandria to prepare for the future grand offensive. German fighter rebases to Alexandria. German bomber rebases to Rodi.

Mussolini conducts a Sea Transport of a 2 step armor from Genova to Alexandria.

Doenitz activates. FHQ fuels a fleet. German fleets deploy. 3CA in NA. 4DD in CA. 2BB in SA. 1BB, 4DD, 5OSS in Atlantic. 5OSS, 5OSS, 5TSS in Atlantic. 4DD in Baltic heads back to port.

Italian Naval HQ activates. Italian fleets deploy. 5OSS in Atlantic. 2BB, 1CA, 2DD in West Med. 2BB, 3DD, 3CS in East Med convoy box. 1CA, 3CS in Med. 3DD, 1CA, 3CS in Med. for transport.

France, as usual, is a quiet front. Very few partisans due to the weather.

Defender Reaction Phase. None.

Combat Phase. Combat east of Alexandria. 3 step German LA tankette vs. 4 step UK Air HQ in swamp across river. Combat yields nothing and the HQ retreats SW of Cairo.

I apologize for the blurry picture...there must have been an earthquake.

No Axis combat on the East Front!!!

Italian Sea Transport to Alexandria is successful.

Blitz Phase. Nothing of note.

Final Supply Phase. German OOS infantry is back in supply.

Armor Exploitation Phase. All German armor HQs on the East Front activate and put armor and themselves in reserve.

Supply Phase. Soviet CS in Black Sea is OOS.

UK produces 1DD cadre, 4DD steps, 3 HQ steps. UK saves nothing this turn.

US produces 3 HQ steps, 1DD step, 1CA step. US saves 13YPP, 10BPP, 2RPP.

UK forces in AFRIKA realign, as much as possible, to get ready for the eventual Axis attack...

Stalin fuels an armor unit. Stalin releases a fighter for air support. Soviet ground forces move forward to conduct attacks in Novgorod, west of Tula, NW of the Voronezh region, and SE of Rostov.

A view of the impending clashes on the East Front

Soviet Naval HQ activates. Soviet CS goes to Batumi port (supply issues).

Soviet Air HQs activate and send out fighters to cover the various battle locations.

Defender Reaction. German armor in reserve react into battle locations west of Tula, the Voronezh region, and the Rostov region. [NOTE: For units in reserve that can move in the Defender Reaction Phase, I am allowing them to move within two hexes of a battle location. This gives a little more flexibility to cover retreat paths and supply lines. This is a way to counter the fact that I know which units are in reserve when playing solo.]

German 4DD, 3OSS in the Atlantic conduct an interception attempt against the bomber Sea Transport and fails.

German 1BB, 4DD, 5OSS conduct an interception attempt against the US/UK joint Sea Transport and succeed.

German 2BB, 2OSS attempt to intercept the US/UK transport and fail.

Combat Phase. Sea Transport Combat. German 1BB, 4DD, 5OSS vs. UK CV (2 air), 1BB, 1DD, 1DD and US 2DD with 6 step naval infantry. CV (Air) gets a hit (German OSS shield). US DD gets a hit (German OSS step loss). German OSS hit (CV to 0 steps). 6 step naval infantry gets shield hit. The transport turns around due to the loss of air support from the CV.

There are a lot of red blocks between German units and Stalingrad...

Greg,

usually during the first winter I'm worried for the Axis losses in Russia.

How is it going in your game?

The main Axis worry at the moment is armor production. The missing 1RPP from France (since it didn't turn Vichy) has been a problem. Germany should have focused some more on constructing armor factories to be ready by Summer 1942.

Since the Axis goal was to cross the Manych, and hold the position through Spring 1942, things aren't going so well in terms of position. The Axis is weak in the Leningrad area and does not have enough to force something in Moscow. It is clear where the Axis movement will be once the good weather hits...
