They are certainly different to own both. I hate one and like the other.

Ok, I'll bite - which one's hated, which one liked?

Hate may be to strong of a word. I disliked Above & Below, liked Ancient World.

I'm opposite. While I do not dislike The Ancient World, I do like Above and Below more.

Truthfully though they are quite different, enough that I might not even categorize them as similar enough to compare like that.

The Ancient World has much shorter game play and is essentially set collection (via the banners on Empire cards and Titan cards). Other than getting more workers, all activities are geared toward building or fighting. And other than the randomness of cards, there is no luck in the game, it is purely strategy. Games of The Ancient World tend to run much shorter than Above and Below from my experience (even though they have the same number of rounds).

Above and Below on the other hand has much more of a story/adventure aspect to it and tends more toward victory point collection. While there are some set collection methods that give you VP at the end, the sources of VP are more diverse. The available activities in Above and Below include harvesting, building, adventuring, and hiring more workers (each of which have different stats and uses). The adventuring action involves a 'choose your own adventure' style story snippet and choices for you to make. The results of an adventure (what you get) changes based on your success and your choice. While there is a lot of strategy to be had in the game, if you choose to do an adventure action, there is some luck involved both from rolling dice to succeed and in what you get based on your blind choice.

Which one is better (if either) depends on what your game preferences are.

I will make one amendment to my earlier statement about The Ancient World concerning randomness. There are Titan dice that are rolled after you fight a titan to determine if they damage you or not. That adds a little extra randomness to the game but only if you attack a Titan and have to roll those dice. At most, you have to flip over some of your Empire cards which then need to be repaired later to be usable again.
