The summary says "with a laser-propelled spacecraft that uses large sails"

Sounds like a Solar Sail with the ESA (?) special ability of beamed power (at least it is in the first edition). So 'yes' it is in the game. Don't know that it gets you to Mars in 3 days, however!

The key is the very small craft. I imagine it would be somewhere in the 1/10th mass point or less range...

Even smaller, each mass point is about 40 tons. at 220 pounds that's 0.1 tons. 1/400 of a mass point.

I refuse to trust any scientific article whose author thinks "this amazing travel fete" is the right term.

The article at the bottom clearly quotes the engineer as stating he would like to cut the 8 month travel time in half, so 4 months not 3 days. Headline is just click bait.
