Am I wrong to think that the following "boardgame expansions" are just entry spam of branded merchandise?

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/153943/munchkin...
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/146658/munchkin...
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/146657/munchkin...

I would have thought BGG wouldn't be the place for this kind of thing.

Well, they apparently affect gameplay.
Quote:
Munchkin Sparkly Good Fairy Shot Glass Rule

The Munchkin Sparkly Good Fairy Shot Glass may be used in any Munchkin game or its sequels.
When fighting a monster, either as the main fighter or as a helper, you may push the button on the Munchkin Sparkly Good Fairy Shot Glass to turn the pretty lights on and then drink one complete shot* to double the combat bonus of a single Potion. You may do this as many times as you like during a game, but only once per monster, and you must discard two cards for every Potion after the first per game. You must turn the lights back off after each use, and if you forget to turn them on before the shot is poured, the effect is wasted (but you still have to drink the shot).

The owner of the Shot Glass is the sole judge of what liquid(s) may be used.
I don't see how the shot glass is different from a promo card. Aren't there promo cards in the database too?

I do agree that it clogs up the database. I wish there was a way that items could be added as sub-items that didn't come up in the general game results. Then you could sweep all the munchkin promo stuff under Munchkin. It would probably work for individual Magic cards and CCG's. Maybe you could set up "families" so that games with lots of expansions, promos, etc. would just show up as a single group entry in the results. Or the group would show up once in the results and there would be something where you could click to see matches within that family or something.

They are components that add a rule to the game.

How interesting! My gut reaction was definitely not, but after examining them they do have rules that incorporate them into the base game. These rules are of course forced and add little to the game, or in fact appear to somehow manage to make Munchkin...worse.

If anything these promotional items could be combined into one entry, but probably should just be removed. Are these promotional items from the actual publisher?

I guess that highlights a bit of a discrepancy. Individual promo cards have entries, whereas individual CCG cards don't.

At the heart of it, I'd argue that it's more of a marketing gimmick to sell tangential merchandise (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/42519/munchkin-...) by loosely pairing it with a mechanic, rather than something explicitly designed to enhance gameplay. That's a pretty fundamental (albeit potentially fuzzy) difference.

Looking further, dear god...

That fairy shot glass would appear to add a whole new dimension to the game, especially on couples night.
