Can escorts attack your sub endlessly or after so many times say 5 or 6 times it has to surface and surrender.

Escorts can attack you over and over until you evade detection. If its after JAN 45 and you have a cutie loaded you can fire it to possibly disable the escort which would allow your sub to slip away.

Yes, endlessly and painfully. If flooding reaches last box, you must surface. If hull damaged to last box--implode, sink and die.

As a compilation of the previous two posts, an enemy escort after detecting you gets to attack. After the attack, it must detect you again. If it doesn't detect you, you got away and it can no longer attack. If it does detect you, it attacks again. I've had an escort detect me four times in a row, but luckily it missed twice and did minor damage (flooding 2 blocks, diesel out, electric motor out) before I got away.

When escorts are involved, consult the Escort Detection Chart [E2]. If detected, the Submarine undergoes an immediate depth charge attack by consulting the Escort/Air Attack Chart [E3] to determine if any Hits occur....The Submarine must then try to withstand continued depth charge attacks by returning to the Escort Detection Chart [E2]. This process is repeated until the Submarine either escapes detection, is destroyed, or is forced to the surface.

Fear cannot be banished, but it can be calm and without panic; it can be mitigated by reason and evaluation.

You can see my forum replay for the tonnage tournament taking place on BBG. The last patrol featured a large number of attacks on my sub that just wouldn't stop.

They keep going until they fail to detect you or your sink. The game does a good job at replicating the sometimes lengthy depth charge attacks subs were subjected to. Some reports had escorts repeatedly attacking a US sub for 2-3 days straight.

See rule 9.6. It lists the parameters for ending combat, there's no cap mentioned.

I interpret a series of successful detection and attacks as not just one escort being involved, even if you take out one of the escorts during the torpedo attack. The longer it goes on, the greater the likelihood that other escorts would arrive and join in.

In real life it would be limited by the number of depth charges carried on board. Something small like a subchaser would not have that many, and subs did get away simply because the a/s ship ran out of firecrackers.
But that isn't modeled in the game; it assumes more escorts have arrived to replace the first one..
