Phil hangs out in the 4G thread, where he is one of the longest running participants. He can be found in the various chains of generosity, including my personal favorite: Pay it Forward First. He is also a regular in Math Trades, despite the fact that the OLWLG seems to hate him. Probably his geekiest contribution to the hobby is his Gaming on a Budget video series, where he and his camerawife post game explanations, playthroughs, and summaries.

Phil has a very colorful past, so I'll let him tell it. And now, sit back and enjoy the Cliff Notes version as told by everyone's favorite Alaskan himself!

SomewhatDamaged wrote:
I grew up in an honest to god hundred acre woods. Except it was actually just shy of 400 acres in the middle of rural Alaska. I could walk as far as I could in any direction and probably not leave our property. Needless to say, I became very good at entertaining myself in the woods with a stick, some fireweed(its a big plant that grows like crazy), and an active enough imagination to convert all those fireweed to goblins and orcs.

At around 8 years old my friend discovered Dungeons and Dragons. And while our comprehension of the rules was middling at best(we thought hit dice meant hit points, monsters were super wimpy) we whiled away hours upon hours as heroic adventurers against the world. Then we discovered Magic the Gathering, and tournament play, and that was another game changer for us(get it??) as we both proved surprisingly good at the game. Is my story boring you yet? Well, the next part gets much juicier I promise.

At 12 I tore muscles in both my arms in a boating mishap and was givin high doses of narcotic painkillers, which I unfortunately enjoyed very much. And I was that wonderful combination of hyper intelligent and incredibly stupid that led my 12 year old brain to conclude "this is fun, we should get more of these!". I'll spare you the gory details, but it led to a long slow decline into addiction, violence, and eventually a nice long prison sentence. Remember that movie Scarface? I kind of saw myself as that for about a decade/decade and a half or so.

Prison actually saved my life. Gave me the time I needed to pull my head up above the water and really think about what kind of life I wanted to live and how I was going to make it happen. I got out and started doing everything I could to make things as right as possible by everyone I can remember ever hurting, which is a long long list. Somewhere along the way a wife and kids happened to me. Ok ok, the next paragraph involves gaming I promise. You needed to understand that to understand this.

So one day my wife, then my girlfriend, and I were sitting around having watched all the movies and played all the video games we cared to. We looked at each other and said "Now what?". I suggested we could play a board game but we didn't have any so I Googled "where can I find cool board games" and guess what site popped up? BGG was a confusing mess to me at the time, but then I noticed a banner add for Pandemic now available at Target. "We have a Target in Alaska!" I cried and we went and bought it. We loved it, came back to BGG, and thats all she wrote.

(Oh and we do review/playthrough videos now)

(Also, before someone complains that Alaska is in America try getting any business other than Amazon to ship here for less than 1 gazillion dollars. Seriously, guys in Europe tell me my shipping costs on Kickstarter make them feel better.)

As always, can you spot Phil's lie?

And just to get this kicked off, let me throw out a few questions:
1 What is the best thing about living in Alaska?
2 If you suddenly became the richest person on Earth, would you move out of Alaska? And if so, where to?
3 If you could have designed any current board game, which one would it be?
4 Which of your game videos are you most proud of?

Enjoy your week Phil!

1. I'm looking out the window right now, know what I see? Trees. Honest to god trees, and that's it. The places in America where you can say that are getting fewer and fewer. Also moose are pretty cool.

2. No? Its expensive to live here precisely because its _better_ than other places

3. Well, I have designed a game. Just not ready to turn it loose on bgg yet. Lots to do.

4. Hmm, well considering our goal is to just show completely honest gameplaying I would say any of the ones where we get so into it we forget there is a camera on. Spyfall was a good example, that pufferfish moment was a thing of beauty.

Well if I have to pick a famous wizard I'd say Zed from the Sword of Truth books. If not I had a wizard in an old DnD campaign that became a set piece for many years to come. It was always fun taking a new me to visit the old me for whatever reason.

1. Black
2. Its spring currently?
3. I wish, I have zero artistic talent of any kind.
4. Always.
5. Pete. I could have been Pete if they had just given me a chance.
6. Pistachios are a big one for me.
7. Sunday, its my only day off.
8. Erm, 3pm?
9. Security maybe? Or Science Officer perhaps. I'm no Picard, that's for sure.
10. My family. My family is everything.
11. Nice simple life in the woods with my family and a giant pile of games.
12. I've played a lot of spellcasters. Or anti-monsters in Rifts.

1. I'm very fickle, whichever one I happen to be playing at the moment usually.
2. Love Letter, if you can somehow define it as a game. Its about as much a game as LCR.
3. President Truman. I'd like to know if I have it in me to give the orders he gave.
4. My brother Duane. He died of an overdose in his 20's and he never got to meet the sober game playing me. And any game really.

1. I enjoy a well made Reuben.
2. My middle sister would kill me if I didn't pick Beatles.
3. We've been enjoying Food Chain Magnate lately.
4. Just got King of New York, instant kid winner.
5. Tabletop for sure, I have no use for the Dice Tower. But I'd pick sitting down and playing a game with Rahdo over either of those.
6. Caverna maybe? Everyone else likes it, but it was a puzzle too easily solved. I haven't lost a single game, or even come close. Very disappointing.

1. I can't remember what its called, but we have this little wooden peg board game about the Alaskan wilderness. That's at least tangentially related.

2. Il Vecchio
3. Battle at Kembles Cascade

It does help that I can see them from where I'm sitting though.
