Is there something I am missing about discount buildings? Often times discount buildings and buildings giving money are available at the same time. Is there a reason I would take a 5 tech discount building over a 6 dollar producing building?
They are both only usable once per era aren't they? Money is more versatile since it can be used toward tech upgrade or many other purposes.

Well, the benefit of the technology discount building is that it saves you an action. Rather than get 6 bucks, which you can then on a future action spend to get a technology, the discount buildings allow you to build that tech for a discount right away.

They're both useful, but the trade off for getting a little less money from the discount building is that it saves you having to take another action next time.

Saving the action is key. Every action you spend is the loss of two potential gold, or two potential extra gold for your opponents (because spending one fewer action would allow you to spend one more turn in golden age or end the round one turn sooner.
Furthermore, saving one action could be the difference between picking or not picking the history's judgment card.
On the flip size, the tech discount buildings means you have to commit to learning an expensive enough tech each round or you aren't taking full advantage of it.
